I go for the Black Scorpion patron set for the majority of my defense based mastermind sets. The extra defense from the shield means I can optimize my build without working on slotting for extra defense. The mastermind's personal defense, in my opinion, is more important than for the pets since tankerminding tactics usually involve the mastermind taking the alpha shot in battle.
Also, the Black Scorpion patron set has a nice AoE immobilize, too! You can take either the shield or the immobilize at level 41. Web cocoon is also a nice hold in the Black Scorpion set.

How much base defense does the scorpion shield add? I looked all over but the only thing on the wiki's is that it add +def to smash lethal and energy. Just wanted to know of the specific numbers so i can see how much inf it would save me for my IO's.
13.5% S/L and 9% Energy.
21.1% S/L and 14% Energy with 3 Defence SO's.
I went with Scorpion. The Scorp Shield adds nice defense and I also use Provoke to draw aggro to me instead of to the pets. I pretty much stay in BG mode.. Let them attack me and the pets will do the work for me..

Heya, i'm having troubles picking which ancillary/patron pool to select now that my mm is at lvl 41. I was originally going to go for the soul patron from grey widow for an aoe immob for when my bots scatter all the enemies but i figured i'd look for a bit of advice.
My build is pretty standard, no attack powers from primary. I like to solo alot but i do team every once and a while.
Looking at the ancillary powers nothing really jumped out at me as OoOOo i gotta get it, but maybe some of them are more useful than im thinking. My defenses are just about fine, once I'm slotted i should be able to get so soft-capped defenses w/o an extra shield. (hopefully)
