The Ashes come to Paragon

It's that time again – the perennial battle for the world's oldest international sporting trophy. The battle for “The Ashes” recommences after a few years of see-sawing momentum that has seen two great rivals take part in some of the most amazing sporting contests ever.

For those of you who aren't familiar, the Ashes is a bilateral cricket competition fought every 2 years between England and Australia – first at home, then away, and there's a fiercely competitive, yet (mostly) friendly rivalry that few other international contests manage to match. But then with over a century of competitive history that's maybe not so surprising.

This series is going to be five Test matches, commencing this Thursday at 00:00 GMT or 10:00 am Local at the “Gabbatoir” graveyard of many a visiting team in Brisbane and the tension amongst almost all cricket fans – regardless of national allegiance – is palpable.

So in honour of this great contest, in City of Heroes, we'll celebrate with 5 tests of our own, in the PVP arena – one for each Test Match, kicking off at the end of each day's play – so we can share the rivalries of the first three sessions and engage in friendly banter as we have at it in various team events.

The icing on the cake is the way in which the CoH costume creator enables you to make highly realistic cricketing “whites” so choose your colour: Baggy Green or Royal Blue to represent the Aussies or the Poms and make a cricketing themed costume. Then come join us for a couple of hours of Mayhem kicking off this Thursday at 9pm GMT (which if I've worked out correctly should be 7am in Brisbane) on Defiant Server. (We'll alternate the EU English servers so everyone can get a go.)

Avatea has kindly offered some gold titles for the event and there may even be other prizes for the overall winners (subject to confirmation) so come and join us for an in game laugh from 9pm GMT in Pocket D on Defiant. All A.T's welcome and any level.

For those of you who want to know more about the Ashes here's a brief look

Great news: I'm now able to confirm that the winner of each contest will win a costume power code of their choice, in addition to gold titles for each contestant!

Sounds like good fun. I'll have to wait until it comes to Union, but it gives me time to prepare for battle against the Sasanach aggressors/uppity colonials (depending on my mood ).

Knights Exemplar: Wolfram, Autumnfox, Starlit Spirit.
Militia: The Portent, Wavekite, Mr. Sandman.
The Cadre: WarpLocke, Zajin.
Numerous others.

Just out of curiosity, doesn't that mean even though there will be two teams (Aussies and Poms) only the highest killing player gets a reward?

I gave some thought to how to divvy the prizes up. Given that Paragon have given us 5 tokens and there's 5 tests it seems fairer to give one out per match rather than to the ultimate team. I don't think people could even guarantee to take part in all of them and then I'd have to keep a tally of victories for all players for all 5 matches and it just turns into a nightmare then

Besides, there's no telling how many will turn up so to make teams even we may need to juggle around a bit.

I'm not setting anything in stone but I imagine something like say 3 or 4 team events followed by a "Run Out" event - basically an FFA for the winning team and the individual winner takes the prize then.

Well at least you can rename the pets

Warnie or Freddie depending on allegiance for the brute of course

But a cossie change and this emote would be perfect

Big contrats to @War Doctor for a magnificent half century and 51 kills over the course of three matches.

Much fun was had and a good comp, so let's see you all for the 2nd Test on 4th of December at 9pm too where a new cossie code will be available to be won!

Gutted that I missed this having had high expectations of being present and representing the green and gold.

Had to make do with watching the cricket in the hotel bar in Birmingham instead, a lonely antipodean voice amongst the poms.

Bet it was even lonlier on Monday. I hear the odds of the Aussies regaining the Ashes have risen to 517-1

We'll be running on Union on Saturday and then the 3rd Test will be back on Defiant on the 17th or thereabouts. (It starts on the 17th at 2.30am GMT so need to figure when to schedule it) so plenty of time to make up for it

ok we'll be running our Third Test tomorrow (Saturday 18th) from 6-7pm GMT - 7-8 CET on Defiant.

I'll be keeping the bouts to lowbies... (under 20) so that it's a lot more inclusive and a chance to win a free cossie code!

Ok following a few setbacks (server maintenance, flu and xmas celebrations) this kind of went a bit quiet, quite unlike events down under.

I also had a few people request an opportunity to win without having to take part in PVP - fair enough if you're not a PVPer.

So I've put my thinking cap on and shared some ideas with Avatea and here's what we've come up with - obviously now it's celebrating a dramatic and definitive victory down under so here's the details:

The Time: Wednesday 12th Jan 8pm GMT

The Place: Atlas Park, Defiant Server.

The Deal: It's a Cossie Comp - with a theme of Cricket (make of that what you will, some examples above if you care to use them but feel free to be creative.)

The Prize: Four Winners (count 'em: 4) will get a costume power code of their choice that they can apply to their account.

So get your whites on (or go for the one day/T20 look maybe) and get down to Atlas and see if you can win yourself a VERY special Prize

Also, every contestant will also get a temp gold title on that character too courtesy of Avatea, so nobody goes away empty handed

Scarlett, quick question. You said the Ashes were the oldest international sporting trophey. I always thought that was the America's cup, which was first contested in 1868, after being gifted to the NYYC in 1857.

Ooh you may be right there. I'd always been led to believe it was the Ashes - but the first England/Australia match took place in 1877 and the battle for the Ashes was first played in 1882/3 so whichever way you cut it, the America's Cup looks the oldest - although there seem to be only 33 competitions played to date and the Ashes played biennially.

Yeah, it's definetly more regular. And more consistent. America's cup races have changed so many times it's not funny.

The other funny thing is officially they don't play for the ashes.

Well they don't play for the URN but the contest is universally known as "The Ashes" and they play for a Waterford crystal vase replica of the urn given to Ivo Bligh.

Ask any living Aussie or English cricketer what they are playing for and you'll get the same answer

Yeah, I always thought it was for the Urn, although I know the English never handed it over. Only saw the piece about the Waterford Crystal in the Wiki when looking at the dates.

Just to allay any confusion, there are no level restrictions on the costume competition. The original PVP games were limited to level 20 to include the casual PVPer but the costume comp is open to everyone of any level - just so long as the theme is cricket based.

Thanks to everyone who turned up and made tonight such an excellent event. Truly Awesome all of you.

I've got to say as the judge it was incredibly tough to choose. Even selecting "Scarlet Shocker's FirsXI" was tough enough but whittling that down to four was really bad and I feel very sorry for those of you who didn't get through to win. For what it's worth, I've often seen cossie comps where you could kind of tell the finalists but this was certainly not one of those.

Big Congrats though, in no particular order to

  • Out for a Duck
  • Ozzie Pride
  • Suprime
  • Ginger Snap

who all left with a shiny cossie power code... and the others all had a lovely gold title to remember the occasion

Mrs? spent all the night filming so there's gonna be some cool footage of a great event and also thanks to Torxue who span some cool tunes on http://roguesradio.com/

Many thanks to Avatea who also worked really hard making sure everyone got their title and giving the codes to those in the know. With one thing and another this turned out to be a tough event to make happen but Avatea was there every day to support it and advise, so a big personal thanks from me to her.

Was a very tough decision to make and I am now traumatised by having to raise the finger to those who were LBW, but I hope you all felt it was a fun event

Cheers for taking part

Was a great event, and was only a shame that I didn't make it past the First XI. Deserving winners, all four of them, and I didn't mind losing to them in the least!

Here's a few shots I took in the general course of things...

Yours,
Jimminy (with two M's - who'd have thunk two people would have the same costume idea!)
