Hey there, You are on the right tracks but personally i think it would be better to go for SL def, gives you are broader range. Just Knocked up a build for you with soft capped SL def and 62.5 % rech, Hopefully will be helpful. With i19 you can add a new pool for more LOTG procs if you wanted.

Here is my current build; however once fitness goes inherent it will be revised for the addition of the steadfast +3def and maybe weave.
With scorp shield this current build hits 29.9% S/L def.
I've found S/L def to add way more survivability then just melee def.

Rare 'cause the only one I've ever seen in-game is mine :P. Here's my build, I slotted for recharge and melee defense since I wade into large groups of mobs. It is the first character I ever IO'd out, and didn't know much about defense.
My survivability is pretty damn high, but I'm wondering if it could be higher, either by slotting for more melee defense, or swapping it all out for s/l defense.
