“Lost” exec producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have sold their hourlong drama script “Once Upon a Time” to ABC.

Pilot, from ABC Studios, is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy with a strong mystery element. Premise is a modern-day take on fairy tales, with a female protagonist who comes from a unique background. Show takes place in a small Maine town during the present time.

Despite the fairy tale premise, show will have a strong human emotional center. Similar to “Lost,” there will be a large ensemble.

“Lost” exec producer Damon Lindelof will consult.

Horowitz and Kitsis had the idea for the show seven years ago, prior to coming aboard “Lost.” The pair, who are longtime writing partners, didn’t approach ABC with the pitch until “Lost” finished its run in May.

Besides exec producing and writing “Lost,” Horowitz and Kitsis wrote the upcoming pic “Tron: Legacy” as well as the “Tron” sequel. They’re also penning “Ouija,” the Universal pic based on the Hasbro property.
Note Fables came out 8 years ago. ABC had already tried to do a Fables TV show, but it fell through.

Er... huh. I'd imagine DC/WB will be looking at this with great interest.

Ok, so is this a version of Fables for the small screen or is this just a blatant rip off of the comic?

I love the comic and I believer the concept could carry over to tv, but I have no interest in watching a plagiarized idea.

It's a rip off. Fables the actual TV show was in development and then got axed for whatever reason.

Probably cheaper to use an "original" idea than it is to have to pay some kind of royalties to use/adapt an existing property.

Fairy tales set in the modern day ain't exactly a new idea anyways.

Now, if they have it some the characters are here hiding from a war, the Big Bad Wolf is a detective of sorts, etc, then we are creeping into rip-off territory.

Exactly. For instance, the ABC (?) miniseries The Tenth Kingdom featured a similar idea, and it came several years before Fables. Note, too, that the setting here seems to differ significantly from the urban, New York focus of Fables.
