Game maps and PnP Games

This subject comes to my mind quite often, and Manofmancharacters thread about pnp rpgs really brings it to mind. I just did not want to steal that threads thunder.

First, the question. Do any of you look at a map in a video game, and think that would be a great location for your pnp rpg?

For example, there is the Oranbanga map where it's a huge rock pillar going both higher and lower than the entrance, and the lower half has parts of the ruins, while a stair runs up the center pillar with a beam of light coming out at the top. To me that would be a perfect map for an Underdark campaign.

Some of the things I want to do in pnp rpgs is start a base, or an outpost. You defeat the enemies in the haunted tower. You cleanse it, and realize it would be an excellant base of operations, and as no one owns it, it's all yours.

When I play video games that allow you to rescue a town, or clean it out, or give you a castle that expands and grows based on milestones in your game, to me, those are perfect ideas for pnp rpgs.

An old inn you take over. (M.Y.T.H. series for that one.)

An abandoned guard tower from an long dead ancient civilization that falls outside your kingdom, but close enough to trade with.

The abandoned desert city that was cursed, and you clean it out.

Even the ancient city inhabited by a group of 'people' that were never part of the original inhabitants, and they want to work with you to get the city going again.

The problem is the gamers I used to game with were never interested in that. Oh sure, they were happy to stay at an inn for 3 gaming sessions in a row, getting drunk, and never actually doing the stories that the GM had written. (The *&^$#%$*&^$%% never wanted to do the adventures I made, but they would never give me an idea as to what they wanted either. Personal pet peeve though. I was not the only GM they did that to.)

Anyhow, what does everyone think?

Answer to the question: Yes. I think the first time I really thought that was Blackburrow in an older MMO.

I do like it when I can establish a base of operations and make part of the world my own. It doesn't always fit the characters to do so, but it can be a blast when it does and it happens.

Huh. Color me surprised. I would have thought there would have been more posting in this thread. *shrug*

Yeah, at times it just does not fit the characters, or even the campaign, but it is fun.
