Thinking of rolling out a new concept character and I'm curious on what everyones thoughts are on what combo for a corr/dom/troller/def would be the uiltimate diabolical doctor/scientist?

It doesnt matter on archtype since GR can let you swich alingments.

Post your thoughts? I'm interested to hear your combos and reasons for your pick.

I usually do this kind of thing in reverse so I can't really help you. In my case I'd probably think of the "ultimate diabolical doctor/scientist" character I'd want to play then figure out what AT/powerset combos best fits that idea in my head.

Good luck to you.

I'm torn because I like all 4 of those AT's. My reason for the post is to get "your" thought on what the best combo for the concept would be. I could see my favorite being a Elec/Dark Troller if we ever get Dark on that AT. But since we now have the cross pool ability I thought I'd put this out there and get everyones input.

It's almost impossible to answer this without writing a few dozen pages. It's worth noting that most evil "scientists" should more properly be regarded as evil engineers. They're generally not experimenting using proper control groups and everything else. Usually they're just applying existing scientific and technological knowledge for evil purposes...

Saying "I wonder what will happen if I burn all of his skin off." before hitting someone with a flamethrower doesn't count as doing science.

Valid point, but what is your idea of the best combo?

For some reason, Plant/ Dominators and /Pain Corruptors would be my first choices. No rhyme or reason, could justify almost any other powerset to pair with those two.

And Masterminds definitely give me the feeling of a diabolical scientist, they control minions and have powerful buffs to make them quite formidable. Bots/FF or Whatever/Poison. Again, no specific reasoning.

I did, however, blatantly choose three AT's introduced in CoV. Even though an Empathy Defender can be a villain these days, I wouldn't be comfortable with an evil provider of CM and RA. Good luck to you though!

Thanks for the reply Catastrophe. That's the input I'm looking for. I have a lvl 50 Plant/Storm/Artic Troller right now and he's wicked fun.

I have 3 MM's but for some reason can't get into playing them. Maybe its the set up, who knows, but your right, they make a very good AT to fall into that catagory. I just wish I liked to play them.

Keep those combos coming. I'm interested in your combo ideas.

I think it comes down to what -you- think the "ultimate diabolical doctor/scientist" means to you. Everybody has their own opinion of what this kind of character would be like. I don't think there could ever be a "best" one to choose from because everyone has a different idea of what the "best" means to them. It's a totally subjective choice.

That's why I find it easier to have a character concept in my head first and then find a way to express that in the game. I'm not really sure you can just pick a single AT/powerset combo out of thin air and say that's the only type of "ultimate diabolical doctor/scientist" you can have.

So the question I'd put to you is what kind of "ultimate diabolical doctor/scientist" do you want to make? By answering that question you'll know what kind of AT/powerset to use. You already suggested a Ele/Dark Troller as your idea of this character type, but since you can't have that right now why not pick something close to that?

This varies from moment to moment, but at this particular instant i would probably go with an AR/Traps as an homage to Doctor Dinosaur, one of my all-time favorite mad/evil doctors.

My Dark/Ice Defender Dr. Malthusian started out as a an alternate world saurian humanoid (from an Earth where the Permian Extinction never occurred and saurians occupied the niche currently occupied by mammals, including primates) with something of the personality of Washu from the various Tenchi Muyo series, but when i saw Doctor Dinosaur i realized she was basically a hybrid of the two.

Schismatrix, that's awesome... Is Dr. Dino a comic book or show?

Thanks for your input. I have not played Dark/Ice but I have used both sets with other combos. I can definatly see the benifits to your choice.

Thanks again.

This was basically the point I was trying to make: What an "evil doctor/scientist" means to different people can equate to pretty much any AT/Powerset you want. There is no "best" choice out there.

My evil scientist:

Rad/rad corruptor- It just seems so wicked to walk around spewing deadly radiation in highly populous areas, weakening foes as I irradiate their bodies until they collapse. You score bonus damage if they're injured!

Alternate power choices: traps for the gadget scientist, electric blast for an alternate, perhaps more Frankenstein-themed scientist.

Other possible ideas:

Robotics/ masterminds. A pretty common combo, from what I've seen in the rogue isles. This goes toward the inventor scientist skew.

Necromancy/ works for this as well, if you're going more Frankenstein.

For mastermind secondaries, traps, forcefield, and poison are good. forcefield/traps for the gadgety scientist, /poison for the chemist.

For dominators and controllers:
I'd say electricity/plants/gravity are the easy primary pics. electric going tech, plant controlling mutant fauna, gravity being the tech manipulating earth's forces.

Dominator secondaries I'd choose: energy/electricity for the gadgety/high tech attacks.
Controller secondaries: Kinetics for energy manipulation, or radiation for, well, I covered this in the corruptor. Perhaps /storm could work too, as manipulating weather.

Me? I went with a Rad/rad corr as it seemed both advanced, but needlessly malevolent and toxic. Irresponsible in its use of science to further its own goals. Scourge just seals the deal for its evilness.

Doctor Dinosaur is one of Atomic Robo's enemies. Atomic Robo is a comic book written by Brian Clevinger.

Honestly, i initially chose Dark Miasma/Ice Blast for the varied effects and utility of Dark Miasma coupled with Ice's rarely resisted damage, -recharge, and Blaster level damage rain powers. As noted almost any combo can be justified, so i like to use unusual combos with a wide range of utility and effects for mad doctors.

Seldom my name sake "Zata Wave" is a Rad/Rad/Elec Def. He was my main for so long. That combo is so awesome, so I'm glad your pick was Rad/Rad. I do agree that Scourge would be amazing. Perhaps I'll go that route and make him my alter earth countepart and start him in Partoria.

Gravity is awesome too. I have a Gravity/Kin Troller and she's really fun. If I go Gravity/Kin Meele that might look like a good synergitc combo if they give Dom's access to KM.

Thanks for the reply, you have some great ideas there.

Love that Doctor Dinosaur comic ...."ta da"....

Can I add my Evil Scientist is a crab spider. Using a scientist type costume with the ubiquitous crab legs looks very Doc Ock-like. Then add some robot underlings, the serum power, the leadership powers to simulate your firm tactical grasp and a few maniacal emotes and there ya go....

I just ignore the whole arachnos and soldier thing....meh....Dr Unpossible is a man of science, not some syncophant following the machinations of an insane dictator and thus can not be confined by the labels of society.

Frog-

That's a very interesting take on this concept. I do have a dual build Crab/Bane right now sitting at 34. It wouldn't be to difficult to create a story for him that explains away both builds.

Thanks for the interesting perspective. That's whats so great about everyones opinions, makes others think in a different way.

Thanks again for the post,

Just dropping by to put one other thought in- for the "evil scientist" I went a new direction on my build: every power possible is slotted with proc/effect inventions that cause the powers to behave as many new ways as possible. So as a mad scientist, not only does the character have super abilities, he's used his skill at inventing to experiment with cause altogether new effects. I haven't gotten the character to mature enough to test the results yet, but here's the rundown on how I'm planning it:

Neutrino bolt: chance for lethal, chance of hold, chance of negative energy

Radiation infection: chance for recharge slow, chance of -res, chance for negative damage (toggle, so it rolls the chance every 10 seconds! )

x-ray beam: chance for lethal, chance of hold, chance of negative energy

cosmic burst: chance of -tohit, chance of immobilize, chance to hold

lingering radiation: chance of smashing, chance of -recharge

stamina: chance of +end (auto, so it rolls the chance every 10 seconds!)

irradiate: chance of fire, chance of -res, chance of smashing

choking cloud: chance of smashing, chance of psy damage, chance of -recharge, chance of +mag 2 hold (toggle, so it rolls the chance every 10 seconds! )

Neutron bomb: chance of knockdown, chance of lethal, chance of negative energy

atomic blast: chance of negative energy

EMP pulse: chance of stun

tactics: chance of buildup (toggle, so it rolls the chance every 10 seconds! )

powersink: chance of stun

The build is still in progress, and will needs some rethinking with issue 19, but it's a fun exercise. All the weird IO's I usually might sell, I craft for him and set them aside. To use all those invention takes some crazy frankenslotting to not lose enhancement value, and it'll take level 50 with purples/hamidon enhancements to get all the way there. But it should be fun just to watch the madness in my combat logs. :P

Posted

That would be quite the build. Very creative thinking for that build. Would that be a 2nd build to mess around with?

Nice one, thanks again.

Posted

Sort of. Right now I'm picking the inventions I think I'll get the most mileage out of, then slotting the rest with SO's. When I get enough slots, I put in another proc in...it slowly builds up.

I can only go crazy, as mentioned, at level 50. Since a hamidon enhancement can work like two to three SO's at once, and purples can give up to 50%, it's only when I get to those that I can throw in all the crazy extras. (not to mention some of the procs are purples themselves, so those must wait in storage as well.)

My Rad/Rad has his Radiation Infection 6 slotted with the Def/To Hit Debuf/End Red Hami's. I havent ever thought of switching them out for one of the IO sets, but after your Proc build I might need to reconcider.

Posted

Hehe. yeah, right now you only need three of those. Three free slots!

The one I might try if I were you would be the achilles: chance for -res. It works best in a toggle, and only one really is needed. This IO doesn't stack, from you or any other sources, but the extra damage is certainly welcome. It''s also pretty durned affordable.

The -Res Proc is awesome, I have it on my Kat/WP Scrapper and it really does make a differance.

I hardy play my Ra/Rad anymore, but if I ever dust him off, he'd definatly get overhauled and IO'd out.
