Oh that was definitely the original plan - once Star Wars had become a hit. It was as self-contained as it was because they didn't KNOW it would be but still, there it is. Very shortly after the release it was obvious, and the ball was rolling. Pretty much EVERY interview (paper, I mean, I didn't see any video ones) from pre-80 would refer to that idea.

I always hated Empire though, because I felt betrayed and let down by the story... but that was because I read Splinter of the Mind's Eye so many times between SW and Empire's release that I had hoped it would be more like that.
