Dark vs Fiery armor for spines
/FA will dish out far more damage.
The damage aura does more damage: 13.76 per tick versus 12.51 per tick
FA also gets fiery embrace which adds damage to everything else.
FA also gets burn. Nothing but damage.
DA provides vastly more mitigation.
Edit: Got my new spines/fa scrapper to level 8 today. I had sworn off FA for a very long time, but accepting it as a damage set rather than a mitigation set, and it actually BEING one since the latest changes, has allowed me to return to it.
Be well, people of CoH.

then which would be better for pve damage?
So dark is more for melee mitigation and fire is for cold and damage?

If you're looking to dish out the most possible damage you can...Spines/Fire Armor beats out Spines/Dark Armor.
So dark is more for melee mitigation and fire is for cold and damage?

If you're looking for better survivability, Spines/Dark Armor wins.
[edit] As to answer the question...what's the difference in damage output. A LOT!

If by "fire is for cold" you mean it will help you survive against cold using enemies, then no. Fire is very weak to cold, and aside from psionic damage, cold is it's biggest weakness. Fire will dish out a LOT more damage than dark will. Dark will survive better due to more filled out resistance types, a larger heal (although that heal will hurt your endurance quite a bit until you slot a +endurance proc into it), some defense added in, and because it has a stun aura toggle and fear aura toggle, although the fear is generally less useful than the stun.

So for what you are looking for, I would say go fire, all the way. Paire with spines, its damage is sickeningly good.
I am very happy to hear that. FA is glorious.
