Beta Install Into a Test install

I have a second installation of COH from the GR Beta test. I would like to turn this into a Test Server install. I had asked this before and someone suggested that I change the tags in the shortcut to test from beta but that didn't seem to work (when is started it, it wanted to download the client again which is what I am trying to avoid). I also changed the folder name to test form beta but no dice. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hmm....

How installs work:

When you install CoH the first time, it puts into your Registry where it was installed so that no matter from what directory CoHUpdater lives in or no matter where your shortcut properties says where the files are located, it looks to the Registry and uses the info there to run CoH.

So, let's say you used the default directory. Whenever you launch the Updater or a Shortcut of the Updater it will look to /(program file directory)/City of Heroes/ to run the game.

Now, when you created a copy of the CoH Shortcut and added the -beta tag, by default, the updater will create a /(program file directory)/CoHBeta/ directory and install everything there and a Registry entry will be made to point the client to use that directory for Beta.

And finally, when you changed the -beta tag to the -test tag, the updater will want to create /(program file directory)/CohTest/ and put a copy of all the files there, and a registry entry will be made to point the client to use that directory to access Test.

And so, when you changed the tags, it should have made that directory (../CohTest/). Did it?

If it did, copy all the contents of /CohBeta to /CohTest and run the Updater with the -test tag again. It should then patch the files instead of redownloading them. That may still take a long time. But it could be the difference between 2 hours and 10 hours.

Thanks for the help. I didn't create a new folder, I renamed the existing one. Was that a mistake?

When it started downloading and you stopped it, did you delete the folder it was downloading to?

Simple steps:
1. Change tags from -beta to -test
2. Run shortcut
3. When it asked "do you want to install in C:\program files\CoHTest" <-What, exactly, did you do here?
3a. If you accepted proceed to step 4.
3b. If you said "No" and changed the directory then did you make note of the directory?
4. The updater starts checking files and downloading.
5. Stop the updater. <-Did you try changing the folder name here? If so, that was a mistake.
6. Using the windows explorer (file system), copy the files from the source directory (any type of existing CoH directory, an external HD/USB thumbdrive copy, or even a DVD backup) to the directory that the updater was downloading to.
7. Delete any .checksum files in the new install directory.
8. Run the updater again.
9. Wait while it compares/checksums the files.
10. Profit?
Now you've seem to have stopped at some point, and you'll have to give us a bit more information for us to help you.

I really appreciate everyone's help. When I got the message in your step 3, I was afraid I would get stuck downloading the whole thing and couldn't cancel so I ended the task and then went back and changed the name of the folder thinking that might be the problem and tried again. I got the same message so I ended the task and gave up and asked the experts.

The trick is to let it start downloading to the new directory, then stopping it.
