Emotes with Powers
Emotes do not work in 'combat mode'. Shield toggles place the character in 'combat mode' as long as they are on.
The plastic tips at the end of shoelaces are called aglets. Their true purpose is sinister.

Not quite. Emotes do work in combat mode. In powersets where the combat modes for armor or the attack set rely on a normal character model, it's a simple matter of propagation.

However specialized versions of the animation have to be done for variations on the combat mode. There are a limited number of emotes available for a Stone Armor character in Granite. There are similar limitations for Kheldian in Dwarf Form. None available at all for a Nova. Same is true for Shield.
In order to make Shields work at all, they had to come up with dozens of animations for each powerset. They didn't take time to make similar adjusted emotes for the "fluff" animations.

Unfortunately in this case when the Devs say it's "working as intended" they probably mean it's "working as we programmed it". I'm sure they never really "intended" to have emotes be limited like that but given the circumstance they probably had no real choice in the matter. Like Lemur Lad said they likely just ran up against the limitations of their animation system and the time they had to work with it.

You can work around it. Try starting off with /e tarzan (which is the same animation shared by several powers) and then doing whatever emote you really wanted to be doing. There are a few other emotes that work as starter emotes as well.
My shield brute was air guitaring with his shield out a few nights ago. \m/_
(Note that if you move your character's position, you'll have to do a starter emote again to get to the emotes you'd really prefer to be doing.)

So I bugged something a couple days ago, and then received an email that it was as intended, and it makes no sense to me.
I run a LOT of shield characters, I like the shield set, and love playing melee... However, shields is unique in that when you have your defenses active you can't emote... None of the emotes work, and today I Was told that was as intended...
Could we please get some explanation on this... please...
