While I have not dual boxed it I have played it to 50 (points to forum name) I must say I love my emp/sonic and I can only imagine what would happen if I had two. Between perma AB and alternating auras your pair would be godly. Immagine easily soft cap defense, amazing regen for when you do get hit, a nice to-hit and damage buff, and awesome mez protection. Thats not even mentioning the offensive might that is sonic. The only thing you may not like is that sonic is mostly a single target set. The few aoes it has are more for utility than for damage. All I have to say is have fun being an awesome pair

My Empathy/Energy Blast duo which I dual boxed were the sickest, most powerful combination I have ever played. That's my experience 
Emp/Sonic should be even better, so its ll downhill from here for you and your girlfriend, you've started at the top! I've also tried twin Energy/Pain Dom Corrupters, and they're nowhere near as good as the Empaths.
My experience of Sonic's AoE power is don't knock it - its better than it first appears. (My Sonic/Mental Blaster certainly found this to be so)
Howl does standard AoE damage, and debuffs Resistance. Shockwave does 80% standard AoE damage, which means standard AoE damage after Howl's debuff is applied. So those two should do similar damage to Energy Torrent and Explosive Blast. Except both recharge in 8 seconds (or <3 if you're perma AB'd and slotted!!)
Hover above the enemies to bunch them up and avoid too much spread from Shockwave, and you should be able to fire these off continuously as an attack chain. Thats pretty decent AoE firepower.
Slight hijack of the thread - but I'm looking into dual boxing and would like some advice on best methods for CoH - everything i have read from my searches says to have a main character and a backup that just buffs/heals on auto? Sounds like you did something a bit more involved? Maybe PM me rather than take over the thread?

if after reading Dr.Mikes page (and, while I am at it, thanks Mike for getting me started ) you have any other questions feel free to PM me.As for what you have read, no, you not stuck ONLY doing that, but then again having a pocket EMP or Kin is never a bad thing, one of my favorite combos was a DP/WP Scrapper with a Sonic/Sonic. Shields/-Res worked great.

You'll do great damage and having Fort up all the time plus AB plus all the other Aura's is great, the Sleep power that Sonic has comes in handy as a soft control too.
