Help - PC restarting itself

Posted

My PC has been able to support CoH/CoV for awhile now but since last month has been randomly restarting itself ***only when this game is up***, usually in a few minutes or so.
Any ideas / solutions? Thanks

Two things stand out. First you desperately need to upgrade your video drivers. They are over two years old.

Second the rebooting is a common symptom of overheating. Open up your case and clean everything out thoroughly with some canned air. Any fans you blow clean make sure to hold the fan in place with a pencil eraser while you are blowing them so that the fan doesn't spin.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

Pretty much what Mandu said.

Take special care to blow out the fins on your heatsink as well. There may be a lot of crud in there (see INSULATION).

If you're familiar enough with putting computers together, and your heatsink setup permits it, you may want to look at replacing the heatsink pad/paste as well. Over time, the pads and paste dry out. So they don't transfer heat as well. Again, ONLY if you're comfortable doing something like this.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Oh, and make sure the power's off when you're blowing out the dust bunnies.

One or the other of these is very likely your problem, it really sounds to me like you're overheating... that will cause a spontaneous reboot every time. The fact that it does it shortly after you start the game is a likely giveaway that your video card is getting too hot. Ancient video card drivers can cause oddball issues as well, snag the latest from www.nvidia.com.

Pop the cover on the machine and evict the dust bunnies from the fans and heat sinks (Make SURE you hold the fans still while you blow them out... spinning fans while cleaning is a bad thing. They make a dandy generator and can feed back electricity into the computer.) If you haven't had the case open in a few years you're sure to have crud in the box.

While you have the case open power the machine up and verify that all fans are spinning freely (DON'T clean things with the machine running).

COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

Not only does it make a dandy generator, but it's possible to dry out the lubrication on the fan bearings and damage the bearings as well. It's also possible to get the fans out of balance so badly that it won't spin properly.

I've replaced more fans in the past few years due to some of the people I work with refusing to follow directions and letting the fans spin while blowing out dust. It doesn't help at all that we aren't using canned air for this but rather an actual air compressor (lowered the output pressure of course) with a nozzle that directs the air rather precisely. They refuse to see the correlation between the fans we have to replace only being in the computers that they didn't keep the fans from spinning while blowing out the dust.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.
