aticfx32.dll, crash on start

Posted

Hey guys, I've recently just upgraded my computer to a Crossfire HD4850 build.

I had some issues in the beginning where Crossfire wasn't actually working, but I've made my way around that, and now, City of Heroes will not start up after I hit "I Agree" in the CoHUpdater, the loading bar shows up, then I get a crash report saying

"City of Heroes has encountered a problem and needs to close. The crash occured in aticfx32.dll"

I have no idea how to troubleshoot this, all I know that this is probably a crossfire issue.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your video driver is way out of date; try upgrading to the latest ATI driver. Your audio drivers are dated as well so you may want to look for new ones there also but the video is what seems to cause problems more often than not, particularly since it looks like it's the ATI driver that's crashing (aticfx32.dll sounds like an ATI driver to me anyway)

That's odd, because i installed the 10.8 beta drivers.

They're the only ones I can get working with Crossfire.
Every other set of drivers Ive tried does not allow the 2nd GPU to go under any type of load, with the 10.8 drivers, crossfire actually works, just now, I can't open CoH

10.8 isn't installing.

Download and install Driver Sweeper but don't run it yet. Download a fresh copy of the drivers but don't install them yet.

In the Control Panel, go to Programs and Features and uninstall the ATI Catalyst Install Manager. Have it remove the CCC and drivers. Don't reboot yet. Open Device Manager and uninstall the video cards.

Reboot into Safe Mode and cancel any driver installations that start. Run Driver Sweeper and have it remove all of the ATI Display stuff except for the new driver package you downloaded. This will remove the remnants of the old drivers that are left after the uninstall so that you can install the new drivers cleanly.

Reboot into normal Windows and cancel any driver installations that start. Run the installer for the new drivers that you downloaded earlier. Run CoH Helper again and check the date listed on the video drivers to make sure that it's the correct date. That should correct the problems. I had one of the ATI driver packages that didn't fully install the first time I ran it a while back so I had to re-run it after a reboot to get it to install the CCC and then everything showed right.

Hope that helped.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

That's the same process I've done, except I've been installing the drivers on the cards 1 at a time.

1 card in for CCC, put 2nd in and Windows 7 auto installs the driver to the 2nd.

Something in your process isn't working or it wouldn't still be showing a driver date from July 2009.

Somewhere Windows is picking up pieces of the old drivers which is likely the cause of the error message with the aticfx32.dll file. You are booting into Safe Mode to run Driver Sweeper?

I tried reinstalling it again, I think this time it did fully install 10.8, but now at the reoccurring issue that crossfire is once again, not working.

I can open CoH again, but its now like all the other drivers I've tried, only using 1 GPU

The 2nd GPU is recognized, I can change fan speed, clock/memory, and monitor temperature, it's just never being used.

City of Heroes won't use the second GPU.

Crossfire isn't supported or profiled by the game.

Only applications that have Crossfire profiles will leverage both GPU's.

This goes for all games I've tried.

Crossfire has been enabled since the start

Okay. It all looks fine.

Not all games are going to use Crossfire.

Right now City of Heroes does not. If you try to force AFR or another rendering method, the game will crash.

If there is another problem at hand, you can test with the Crossfire Enabled benchmark Heaven 2.1: http://unigine.com/download/

Heaven 2.1 RadeonHD 4850 Crossfire On

Heaven 2.1 RadeonHD 4850 Crossfire Off

* * *
Just re-ran the benchmarks to get them on the same display configuration:

RadeonHD 4850 Crossfire off: Score 939

RadeonHD 4850 Crossfire on: Score 1705

If you don't get any improvement running this benchmark, then you need to head over to AMD support: http://forums.amd.com/game/

Also: for reference, the system information that's actually useful. CPUZ will also tell us what motherboard you are using, what chipset, and what your actual bandwidth is. In this case this particular system is limited by a first gen PCIE 8x link.
