Thank you all again for the comments. I have decided to play a dark/dark defender and see where that takes me.

No, no way of linking two accounts together. You can, however, always start up an "old folks home" with some of your friends (or some other combination - redside vs blueside, though with GR that means less) and start transferring characters. If they transfer with you, you've got the core of a SG there.
Admittedly it costs money to do so, but it's an option.

my fiance had one of those. he really loved it. dark/dark when mixed with dark epic pool is not only able to solo, but it it becomes a mini-troller, with some powerful debuffs and some impressive damage.
dark/dark/dark is a pretty strong build, with lots of flexibility, a fair pet, and plenty of healing as well.
