Energy Melee and...

I've been toying with a new Tanker, and I thought I'd get some ideas from the community.

I'm not totally decided on which way to go. The secondary will be Energy Melee, but I haven't decided whether to go Invulnerability or Willpower.

Invulnerability, I know well. Willpower, I don't. What are its strengths and weaknesses? Based on its apparent large self healing component, it would likely go quite well with Energy Melee (to counter Energy Transfer's self damage), and it has Quick Recovery, which when paired with Stamina will make it very difficult to run out of endurance (which you may know, will go FAR with me).

How would you build such a character? The only pools I'm thinking of giving him are Flight and Fitness, but I'm flexible.

I'll post some proposed builds tomorrow, but any thoughts are welcome.

I have a fun Invul/EM tanker, but I would probably go Willpower.

Strenghts, does everything well, nothing great, kind of jack of all trades set.

Weakness: Aggro is one, though taunt is an easy fix to this (probably other weakness)

Quick Recovery will help a lot, especially with EM, the only problem would be that Rise to the Challenge needs to have baddies in order to give you + regen (its exactly like Invinciblity, except instead of +def, it gives +regen), and the stun from Whirling Hands (AoE) may cause baddies to wonder away from you

I say go for WP/EM and have a blast

I would/did go for Shield/EM - Shield Charge gives you extra AoE lacking in EM.

L50s: Tanks: Cryofission - Ice/EM - Dr Celsius - Fire/Ice - Saint George - SD/SS | Controllers: Psichosis - Ill/Kin - Major Chaos - Ill/Stm | Scrappers - Neutron Crusader - DM/SR

Currently Levelling: Angelic Blade - BS/WP Scrapper | Seeds of Destruction - Plant/Kin Controller

I would avoid WP/EM. Your primary and your secondary will be working at cross purposes.

/EM is a painfully slow and heavy set. It has one weak and small AoE attack, and the rest are single target. Since Willpower's weakness is aggro holding, and benefits from having mobs in the range of its regeneration aura, a slow single target set that makes stunned mobs wander away from you is about as bad a combination as you can imagine. The only possible worse combination would be Fire/EM, and that's debatable.

If you really want to play /EM, I'd suggest dark armor or ice armor as a primary. You will get some stun synergy from dark armor, and ice benefits from the sorts of control you get with /EM.

Well, it sounds like you're saying you've played invuln a lot. On that basis, I'd go with WP just for variety.

As for Stamina, my preference is to skip the Fitness pool on characters with WP or regen sets. That opens up 3 extra power picks. My WP tank has all the key powers, plus Combat Jumping, Tough and Weave by level 26.

As a comment on EM, it sounds like you actually care about damage output. EM isn't really great for damage and you get your big attacks very late. My inv/EM doesn't even have Energy Transfer.

Re the build: No Taunt? WP has a very weak taunt aura. Unless you're going the scranker route, WP needs Taunt more than any other set.

As it happens, I actually LIKE Hurdle quite a bit. A good many of my characters have it. Health seemed like more of a good thing on a build with lots of regeneration. I mean, is there a regeneration cap? Having Stamina as well means I will very rarely run out of Endurance, which is one of my biggest peeves with the game, as some will tell you.

In short, I'm seeing lots of great reasons to use Willpower, but in the end, it's about survivability. I've been trying to compare, but my experience so far has been inconclusive. The numbers in Mids' heavily favour Invulnerability, but it's hard to compare since there's such a large healing component to Willpower.

I don't know. I'm continuing my testing, but as I say, I welcome any thoughts or observations.

I wonder, would swapping out the Fitness pool in favour of Combat Jumping and Manuevers be a good idea? I mean, the set appears to be somewhat more reliant on Defense than Invulnerability...

Combat Jumping, sure.

Maneuvers, not a big fan of. Similar defensive numbers to Combat Jumping for over 5 times the end cost.

On my WP Tank, I fit in Fitness in the 40s just so I could run faster, and to push my Regen higher, both of which helped his playability and performance. Didn't need Stamina at all, though. With the accolades, Quick Recovery, and bonuses, his blue bar does not have any issues.

I would say Combat Jumping is nice on most tank builds, as it's a cheap toggle for a nice layering of defense to what you have already. Maneuvers is kind of meh. Lot of other powers that would help, I think. Get that defense from Weave, bonuses, Combat Jumping, your primary, etc.
