Need Help with a Kat/SR Build

Hello fellow gamers!
I've respec'd twice now, and I'm happier than I was before, but I still think that my build could be better. (Particularly since I made a mistake with slotting when I did the last respec.) I'm a controller at heart, but I would love to have a kick-butt scrapper like so many great players do. I'm open to anything and looking for the best. You're fantastic players, and I look forward to your advice, so that I too may reach your upper echelon of scrapper-ness. ^_^
Thanks in advance and I'm excited to see your builds. I should have my current one up sometime this evening.

I'd be glad to help, but I like to see people's own builds before I make one up, since you likely have certain power choices and build preferences that I would then take into account. When you post your build, please also note any power picks and build goals that you wish to achieve and/or not have altered. Also, if you have any spending limit or IOs that you don't wish to invest in, such as the PVP IOs for example.

If you're unclear on how to slot a specific power, let us know. I know there are many, many opinions on how to slot DA. And I know one of my new quirks, which is great btw, slotting hurdle twice, isn't going to be something you're planning in your build.

Post your build and we'll poke at it. I only know katana well, but I do know it well.

Here's the build, folks. Thanks again for the help. I'm really wanting my scrapper to be stronger and I think I could've forgone certain sets for the sake of more damage. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
@Gaidin: PVP IOs are out of the question, LOL. But apart from that, I don't mind spending the funs necessary to make Bunny more scrapper-worthy.

What I'm looking for is to be somewhere between a tank and scrapper, have a good defense (which I think I do -- just need to switch some things around possibly), and deal very good damage, but without needing purples. Some powers, like Conserve Power, I hardly even use, so that would be one thing that could be scrapped.

Pun totally intended.

OK, plenty of room for improvement here. First objective is to get your defence up to the soft cap (45% def to melee/ranged/AOE) which will make a huge difference to your survivability, as that will floor most enemies chance to hit. It also makes elude and divine avalanche redundant, freeing up a couple of power picks (acrobatics is also unnecessary as practised brawler covers your KB and mez protection). With the 3 freed up powers I'd grab the fighting pool to get the extra defence from weave and the resistance of tough, and gives somewhere to slot the steadfast protection +3% defence IO.

That should move your defences up to within a couple of set bonuses of the 45% mark, and you can pick those up easily enough from completing the set of Guassian's in Build Up and with some better slotting of your attacks. First, drop the touch of lady grey and kinetic combat sets altogether, they're not doing much for your build and personally I'd recommend always slotting your attacks as attacks if you plan on using them. Touch of death or mako's bite in melee attacks, and scirocco's, obliteration or multi-strike in PBAOEs would be a much better fit for you with useful bonuses and good enhancememnt numbers.

Finally, think about taking the medicine pool. With an interrupt reduction IO slotted, Aid Self can be used in the middle of a fight if you do get unlucky and take a few heavy hits in quick succession. A soft capped SR scrapper with a self heal is very, very durable. Keep a couple of orange insps in your tray for tougher fights and you should be able to take on just about anything in the game.

I don't have a current saved build for my own Kat/SR, but this is pretty close to it (with the purples taken out).

I really have nothing to add...except if this is SR and we're at 50, since we're capped already on positions, why take DA? DA is great to spam at low levels, but the whole reason we take SR is so we are untouchable without DA.

With SR, you can cap cheap. No need for Oblits, etc.

Here's a /SR build that I have. She's a BS/SR and this is a levelling build, if I choose to follow it. It's cheapo cheapo and capped.

I couldn't use mids on your build, Bunny. The site it redirects through for the link is blocked at my work.

Edited to add...I'm not really happy with the build I posted. I need to steal slots from one power to put them in another and change the order, etc.

The build I put up with DA and heal was to provide multiple layers or survival not just resting at 45%. Even soft capped you can get hit. Having not played my SR in ages against mobs that can debuff def, I hedged that having DA slow a cascading defensse failure would help.

Defense debuffs shouldn't really be a concern. SR can achieve 95% def debuff resistance which will give you enough prtoection from the few debuffs which will actually hit you. If you have a couple of percent extra defence to buffer you, then to all intents and purposes you will never have to worry about being debuffed to the point where it will affect your survivability.

This with emphasis. My claws/SR can aggro the rooftop during an ITF run and hardly see her defense numbers change. I can die but it won't be from cascading defense failure it will be from the sheer ongoing damage output from a swarm of Cimerorans dog piling me and overwhelming my passive regeneration while I remain essentially at the soft cap the entire time.

Pun totally intended.
Any powers you want or is it pretty much anything goes long as it meets the above?
For example, Super Speed vs Fly vs Super Jump vs "I'm going to use Ninja Run and skip a travel power" Task Forces? stealth ability? Or fun stuff like, "just how fast can I go with just sprinting"? Will you exemplar often?

In general I find my /SR's use 5 or more commonly 6 slots for their attacks. For Katana I'm looking first at Gambler's Cut, Soaring Dragon, and Golden Dragon Fly. Any further attack powers are for AoE ability, variety, fun, or as a set mule (or some combination of these).

Defenses - Toggles for a general purpose build are generally 5 in FF, 4 in FS and Evasion while the auto's will get 3 each.

Practiced Brawler - 1 slot most likely, a recharge or endred.

Quickness - 1 run spd typically ... and again for a general purpose build.

Elude - not likely in a general build. I'm aiming for the soft cap, once there Elude does little to nothing for the build. Specific builds or for specific purposes I have included it.

For pools I usually grab Fighting for Weave and Tough, Fitness, Leaping for Combat Jumping, +/- a travel power pool. And unless I have a particular goal or concept Body Mastery with intent to pick up Physical Perfection.

All this assumes and endgame build.

Now this brings up a question for me: Is it absolutely necessary for a scrapper to softcap defense? And if the scrapper doesn't, does that make them less? Thoughts?

No a scrapper does not need softcap defense, it only makes them better You can play most of the game with 30% defense and be just fine. Are you less of a scrapper if you don't have it not really you might not be able to solo AVs without softcap defense. You might not be able to solo at +4/8 but, on a team you can still kills things just like any other scarpper can.

Certainly not necessary for all scrappers, but for SR it's so easily achievable without any compromises in slotting or power choices that it would be quite hard not to end up with soft capped def on a IO'd build . Basically you're getting the same level of survivability that you have when you use elude, but with no crash. You'd still have a perfectly playable character without softcapping, especially with katana as your primary, but there's really no good reason not to.

Need for doing what?

Absolutely necessary or even slightly so for the vast majority (if not all) of PvE content .... a resounding NO. The claws/SR I mentioned, my main, hit 50 long before combat attributes, real numbers, IO sets etc.. In the course of getting there she earned numerous badges, and engaged nearly every challenge this game could offer. Most of those challenges are still there and are more or less the same challenges as when she undertook them. She did so without being anywhere near the soft cap except when she popped her so very not perma-Elude ('nerfed' about the time she got to that level as I recall). Her defenses, I discovered, when real numbers and combat attributes showed up in the game, hovered around, by today's standards for an IO build a whalloping 30% or so.

By the same token expecting to grab the attention of a slew of Minotaurs and Cyclops on the ITF or take on large numbers of level 54 Rikti Magus, Mesmerists and Soldiers on the edge of the bowl in a mothership raid and live there's no question a soft-capped high end, highly IO'd build has a far greater chance of living through the event than an SO build does, particularly if the character is doing so sans things like teammates, inspires, teammates, click accolades, teammates, and all sorts of other crazy stuff one might do to "push the limits" like stuff without teammates (did I mention teammates enough ).

With that understanding it was an easy switch of powers to change the build to remove DA.

I put this build together for you, and it is one I would definitely play. It uses no Purples and no PVP IOs. I did put in unique IOs: Kismet, Numina's, Miracle, and Regenerative Tissue. Of these, you would only need the Numina's in order to remain soft-capped to Ranged, and could work towards the others if you couldn't afford them immediately.

- soft-capped vs. all positions
- +95% Defense Debuff Resistance
- runs the GD > GC > SD > GC attack chain gapless (best katana attack chain)
- endurance sustainable (you can run the attack chain indefinitely without running out of endurance)
- +95%+ Acc vs. +4 mobs on all attacks
- Tough is fully slotted for 17.7% S/L resistance
- 309% Regeneration.
- has travel power (Super Jump)

If you get the four main Accolades, which I highly recommend you do if you haven't yet, you have 1802 HP and regen 23.2 HP/second. I have the four Accolades turned on in the build, but you can turn them off if you wish for comparison's sake.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I worked over 11 hours today, so if I have made any errors due to being sleepy, please forgive me. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much. I tried to incorporate some of the advice of a little bit of everyone. Here's what I've got so far. And as was mentioned, I do plan on working toward the Numina and Regen uniques to slot in health. Please let me know your thoughts on the new build, as its still under contruction (you'll notice some of the empty spots).

Other than the build being incomplete, I'm sad to say that it isn't a very good build. Your attacks are poorly enhanced and so are your defenses. You are only at softcap for AoE, which is actually the least important position (Melee being first). You shouldn't need to take DA or Elude, and both should be removed from the build once softcap to all three positions is attained.

Quite frankly, I looked at the other suggested builds in the thread, and none of them are taking full advantage of the strengths of either your primary or secondary. Instead of trying to incorporate what everyone has told you, because some of it isn't terribly good advice, I would simply recommend you use the build I provided.

Re: Gaiden
Saved that. Very tight.

I'd miss Hasten when exemping [I'll adapt it to a BS/SR, I never took Hasten on my katana. At least not on her first 50 respec, which I desperately wanted Vengeance.]

Don't know if it's the best solution but a fast and easy change is to swap Lucky and Hasten around ... your AoE pre 45th would drop to 36.5 without Lucky (and DDR to just shy of 90%), one luck inspire away from back at the cap+ if you find yourself swamped in AoE.

Yeah. Just switch around powers. I didn't build it with exemplaring in mind since the original build she posted didn't seem to either.

If you don't mind using Hurdle + Ninja Run + Quickness for travel, the easiest solution to avoid losing early survival would be to swap the locations of Super Jump and Hasten.
