Was it an abnormal close? If so, the updater will automatically verify all files to check if any are corrupted and thus caused the abnormal exit. Ignore the four hour estimate. Our updater is really, REALLY bad at time estimation.
If the game closed because you backed out and exited yourself.... then I got nothin, and hope someone else will be along shortly to help.

As Honbrid said, if you backed out to the starting screen and clicked exit then the game should have started normally. If you closed the program in any other way including just powering down the computer then it will be considered an abnormal termination and the game will try to repair all files.
It shouldn't actually take 4 hours though. That's just a rough estimate based on how long it is taking the game to double check the first files.

To exit the program, I clicked the back buttons, then exit. I was going to wait it out and see if the file 'fixing' would be shorter, but it looked more like a re-download.
I put the question to NCSoft yesterday, and someone called Steve said he'd 'escalate it to technical support', but they seem in no hurry to answer it.
Has it since fixed itself? Did you let it do what it wanted? If not, then be sure to respond to the email they sent you to keep the support ticket open.
Did you run the updater, or the downloader you got from the website? I'm not sure if they are the same, but other threads I've read make me suspect not. The updater will check for a new patch, then start the game if it doesn't find one. The downloader though will just download the whole game again before running it.
If someone comes along and say I'm full of trash and the programs don't work this way, I'll be mighty embarassed.

Hi, I downloaded City of Heroes (which took about 2 hours), installed it, and went half way through the character creation process, when I had to close the game. When I went to reload it to go back to that process, the updater wanted to fix all 3 gigabytes of the game files, which it says would take four hours.
Why do the files of a newly installed game need fixing?
