Dark/Dark Tanker Defence IO Build Advice

Hi all, I have a prospective build for a Dark/Dark tank. While I aimed for softcapped defense, I wasn't able to hit it. Still, I'd like some feedback and suggestions. I feel this build should be pretty survivable, but moving it toward even better defense without otherwise nerfing it would probably be better

Any and all constructive criticism is appreciated. I'll be playing this guy PvE, and aiming at high level content.

I can get you over the s/l soft cap easily.

Lose a few slots in OG and 4 slot taunt with Mocking Beratement. Only 4 slot Tough with Reactive Armor. Take the second slot in Combat Jumping and the extra slot from tough and put them both into Weave. Add a third def. and an end redux in Weave. Should set you at 45.9% s/l with just a lvl 30 def. IO. You could also get a little help with your endurance if you 4 slot GotA in Weave instead of the def. IOs.

I had a fm/da scrapper I was working on that was a very mixed build. Might give you some insight. It mixed, the res, with some defense, and regeneration. Mixed with the tools in DA, it looked solid, I deleted the toon, cuz I have too many works in progress, and need to get them done.

This may not be up your alley, but might give you some ideas to play with.

Would it be worth it to get to the soft cap in s/l at the cost of losing the defense from everything else?

Because I could just switch out the Scirocco's Dervishes for Multi-Strike in that case.

Well actually it kinda does work. my fire/kin/earth troller is soft capped to S/L and because almost all attacks have a smashing and leathal component in it, it roles to the highest defense, rendering the majority of attacks only a 5% chance to hit on a even con.

That troller is a beast, even out of council and bm farm. I hate createing a very one sided toon anyways, to me it takes the playability out of the toon.

You don't need to do that; just adding an additional Reactive Armor set to Tough and fully slotting Weave will get you over the soft-cap for S/L. Personally, I think slotting Multi Strike for the typed defense bonuses is a waste; way too many slots for relatively little bonus.

There are other issues with your build that you should consider addressing; for one, all the attacks that are slotted with Kinetic Combat are underslotted for accuracy and damage. Also, Death Shroud and Weave are underslotted for end reduction; DS should have at least 60% end red, and Weave at least 40%. As Rangle suggested, you can pull some slots from Op Gloom to 5-slot Taunt and put additional slots in your attacks or Weave.

Ditto on Soul Drain and Cloak of Darkness for end reduction; and you should be taking Soul Drain much earlier than level 47. I also think you should strongly consider slotting Siphon Life as an attack--it does superior damage which is just as important as the fact that it's a heal. (Especially since you have Dark Regen, a far better heal.)

EDIT: IMO, you won't be able to soft-cap S/L/E/NE/F/C without seriously compromising your build, so the key is to prioritize: S/L first, then E/NE, then some F/C. If you have to give up some F/C def to get more S/L/E/NE, it's worth the trade-off, IMO, since F/C damage is so much less common than S/L/E.

Ok thanks, that makes sense to me. I do have a couple of questions though:

  • With removing all the slots from OG, would I be better served with something higher than AbsAmz-Proc? Something like Stun/Rng or Acc/Stun/Rech?
  • How much earlier would you suggest Soul Drain (ie, what would you bump for it?)

OG has decent accuracy without slotting, but a Acc/Stun or Acc/Stun/Rchg would work well.

Here's a quick reordering of your build. If you can't stand waiting so late to take SJ, you could push the entire Fighting Pool back to 41-44-47.

Alright, thanks

Since I just got this guy up to OG today and was underwhelmed I think I'm going to slot the AbsAmz so at least it will still have some useful effect on LTs.

What about slotting a Scirocco's Dervish +Lethal Proc in Death Shroud in place of one of the other Scirocco's D pieces?

That's fine, it's really up to you; as I said, OG has good accuracy unslotted. (Unlike Cloak of Fear) I do recommend the Kismet +Acc, though, it'll help with OG, your attacks, and Dark Regen too.

You really need the end reduction in the two Scirocco's, so drop the Erad Damage instead. That way, you'll still get the end reduction you need, and the 3-slot E/NE def bonus from the remaining Eradication pieces.

I have two remaining questions: The average damage for Death Shroud with a proc (either Eradication's Energy or Scirocco's Lethal) are one point of damage less than just slotting an Eradication: Dmg. I assume that Energy is less resisted by mobs than Lethal, but is Energy resisted less than Negative? Because if one is not resisted less than it would seem to make more sense for me to leave it as is and forgo the Proc in that power.

Secondly, never having used Dark Consumption before, would it be worth dropping one of the Eradications in it and replacing it with an end mod or endmod/recharge (I'd still get Eradication's defense set bonus in that case, and the per-enemy recovery would go from 25% to 31.6 or 35.6%)

Finally, I switched the Acc in Boxing with an Acc/Dam Hami-o.

Any further feedback?

In terms of enemy resistances, I believe it goes Lethal > Energy > Negative Energy. But keep in mind that although Mid's averages it out for you, the NE damage will always be in D.O.T. form, and the damage from the proc will come all at once--a 20% chance of 72 points of damage every 10 seconds for every target in range. Since the additional damage from the Erad damage IO is past the ED cut-off, if you go that route it'll only add something like .4 points of damage per pulse.

Personally, I think the proc would be more useful since it gives you a bit of burst damage along with the D.O.T. Also, keep in mind that although NE is in general resisted less than energy, there will be some targets that have high resists to NE, (CoT ghosts, IIRC) that probably won't resist energy damage. Having a mix of damage types is always useful, IMO.

Either one would be fine, but since DC uses a tiny amount of endurance and has a long recharge, I think I'd drop the Erad Acc/Dam/End/Rchg and replace it with a level 50 EndMod/Rchg. (Besides, the Erad quad is very expensive, so if you can avoid using it, all the better.)

Unless you're actually planning to use Boxing as an attack, I wouldn't bother. I always put something there only because it looks funny empty.

Looks pretty good. When it comes up in Mid's for me, there are two unassigned slots, and I'd put one, if not both of them in Stamina. Two EndMod commons with a Perf Shifter +End is my usual slotting for Stamina.

With Maneuvers running, you're well above the soft cap for S/L defense, so you could drop one of the Kin Combat set for something cheaper, if you wish.

You are over the "rule of five" for 1.8% +end bonuses, so you might want to consider replacing one of the GotA sets for LotG.

Also, if you can free up another slot, a 6th MB slot in Taunt will give you a cheap 7.5 Recharge bonus.

Huh, don't see the missing slots for me. I must've CAPed it wrong or something.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I've already spent the money on the KCs, so I'm going to keep them in, but I've switched out the GOTA from Weave into a LoTG, dropped it down to three, then moved the other slot over to taunt like you suggested for a total of +15% Recharge time, which is great.

I'm expecting to work on the Cardiac Alpha, so that'll help the resistances and the endurance too.

Even with those changes I'm still over the 1.8 End set cap, but that's as a result of all the sets of taken for the +Def which comes after the +End bonus, and I'm not immediately seeing any other places to change to fix that.

Swap the GotA set in Cloak of Darkness for a LotG set like you did with Weave. You'll get another 7.5% recharge and you won't be losing out on a set bonus.

Also, if you can only have the default slot in Physical Perfection, the Performance Shifter Proc will do more for you than a single End Mod. And yes, you CAN slot more than one of them, they are not unique.

I'd also swap out the Performance Shifter piece in Dark Consumption for a 4th Eradication for the Max HP bonus. Chances are, when you use that power you're going to be in the middle of a spawn anyway, so it doesn't matter if it isn't slotted for end mod.

Right. That makes sense, thanks.

As for the PShift, I think I might hold onto the endmod until I see how the build handles high level AVs. If I find that I'm ok for endurance even with them, then I'll think about the Eradication.

I do wish Mids factored the average from this proc into account, maybe with an on/off option. Would be useful for the Gaussian's proc as well

The PShift proc averages out to 0.2 end/sec if you have 100 max end, and more if your max end is higher. While I agree it would be nice if Mids did the math for you, you can still make some easy comparisons.
