CoH crashing

Going to post this over here...

Before coming back to play Issue 17, I was away trying out STO & CO... the game in general has never crashed on me. Now this last couple of weeks, including just now, the game will crash and up ops the famous Microsoft error message asking if I want to send a report to Microsoft, which I never do, then re-start the game again. There seems to be no real reason or game action that seems to make it crash. The 2nd last crash I was crafting and the message popped, and a couple of times I was either changing zones or leaving the mission map.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Post a log from running CoH Helper as it will give information about your system and the CoH installation and settings.

Then, post a log from running HijackThis. This will show what else is going on on your computer while you are playing CoH.

In 6 years of playing the game on three different versions of Windows, I've never had the Microsoft error dialog pop up on a crash. I've had the games error box pop up asking what I was doing when the crash occured, but never the Microsoft error reporting message.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I've only had this issue, like I said with the release of Issue 17. This is the same PC from last year and CoH ran fine then and up until I 17, didn't even crash with Beta testing 17. I'm also finding slight lag with this new Ultra mode that I don't turn on, and the odd thing is that I see less people online, but go to Atlas and it studders at times. I feel like they added new features but should of left things as they were, in the graphics departments, I was happy with that

Well, if you don't want help resolving the problems you are having, I won't waste my time here.

Apparently you just want to complain.

Carry on without me.

not complaining, just stating a fact and don't group me in with other whiners who come here, just not impressed of years of game play then an upgrade comes along and things go south is all

Yes, the game changes. We've had a revamp of the game engine to make it look better. The devs tried real hard to keep older hardware and minimal settings working, but everyone needed to update their graphics drivers. It happens with all games that you play for years. Even console games will require a new console every 3-4 years to play the next installment of the game.

But also computers change. As you add and remove programs and visit websites, your hard drive and software registry becomes more and more a mess. After several years, it's not uncommon to see a computer pick up over 30 processes that are starting at start-up (most users aren't even aware of it).

So, that's two reasons why what worked a year ago isn't working now. You presume everything should just be the same and that is a very, very, very wrong presumption.

If you want help, post the results of those two programs linked above.

If you don't want help, don't complain. You're not helping at all if you're not willing to answer questions and post those logs. For all we know, you could have a computer virus that's the problem. And if we don't know that one way or the other, your complaint is useless as a data point for the devs or other players.

where do I post the results? Is there a specific thread I should post to?

Again, as I stated before, it's not a full year of NOT paying CoH. I was trying out other MMOs, and coming back here on occasion, I was even asked to Beta test Issue 17 via email. I'm not a nOOn, I have an IT background and work for a major ISP in Canada. I just found it rather odd that say in the last two weeks or so I'm getting the MS error window, as Texas stated he's never seen in 6 years of play and I've been playing since 2007, and I've never had an issue with the game until now.

Post 'em right here.

  • CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
  • HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

Paste them into separate posts in this thread. Separate posts tends to work better because you avoid the "wall of text" appearance, and you also avoid getting your post truncated for being too long.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Your graphics driver is out of date.

Also, you have **a lot** of background junk running on your computer. When you start up your computer the following programs also start:

  • Peggle Games
  • MS Messenger
  • Java updater
  • Both(!) Corel and Microsoft productivity software
  • Acrobat 'helper' program
  • Windows Live
  • Real software 'helper'
  • Nero software 'helper'
  • bunch of Logitech, pointer, display, scanner, bluetooth, graphics 'helper' processes you probably don't use and don't need (the actual installed drivers or MS default drivers usually run them just fine and don't appear in the start-up registry)
  • Quicktime 'helper'
  • Steam 'helper'

Also, something odd: it seems you have AVG and Norton and Zone Alarm all running and yet a HijackThis analyzer I used said you didn't have any active anti-virus scanner running.

Your saving grace is your quad core. While CoH uses two thread, your other two threads are running all these other processes. On older machines, this would make the game stutter. On your computer, it's probably only a small hit to FPS, but a dangerous way to tempt fate: someday one of these background processes is going to conflict with CoH software-wise.

It's usually wise to strip all these programs out for a gaming rig. It's also usually wise to get rid of them anyway. Do you remember which ones asked your permission to install themselves in your start-up registries? Probably none. That makes them malware, or at least intrusiveware. A well-behaved program starts when you call for it; and when you close it, removes itself completely. It doesn't secretly set itself up to start each time you run your computer.

AVG is his AV (or should be). It's possible his AV program has crashed too.
Norton is actually the Ghost system backup tool running in the background.
ZA isn't an AV, merely running independently as a system firewall and app controller.

Again, this has been my sys all time I been using Coh, and I had an older PC prior with less resources and diff video card that ran perfectly fine since I've been playing the game

I updated my video driver today and will try again. It just doesn't make sense that a big patch would cause this kind of trouble. As for graphics, I use to run 1 notch above Recommended, last night I run on the lowest setting with no crash, but not sure if that's the issue.

Issue 17 was a major graphical update. Old video drivers were known to cause problems during testing. Luckily, you have an actual video card and not some onboard graphics solution like some players do. I'd recommend the 10.5 drivers since they are the newest and seem to be quite stable with the game and XP.

Also, make sure that your Catalyst Control Center settings are the same as your in-game graphics settings. I'm referring to things like Anti-Aliasing settings, Anisotropic Filtering settings, etc. I've found that setting them to "Application controlled" works best for me. YMMV

EDIT: One of the benefits of Ultra Mode (the graphical update) is that they finally got rid of the main problems that ATI users had previously. You should be able to increase your graphics settings to give you a better visual experience without lowering your framerate.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Let's go with a building analogy.

Let's say you lay a foundation for a house. It's good for maybe a REALLY big house. 2-3 stories. Maybe, if you wanna push your luck, 4.

Now what happens when someone tears up that house and builds a 70-story skyscraper instead. Do you expect that foundation to be in ANY way suitable? Do you expect the original plumbing setup to be able to handle the new load (pun intended)? How about the original electrical fittings?

Pretty much ANY software has stability/compatibility issues if left long enough. Sooner or later you come across something the original programmer never thought about, and/or just flat-out didn't exist at the time, that just causes stuff to wig out on you.

And patching. You're patching old code to fix it. But what other effects do those patches have? Do they interact with other portions of the code in unexpected ways? Patch one thing, break 6 more?

This kind of thing is distressingly normal, unfortunately. And fixes are usually both non-intuitive and slow in coming (as they have to go in and tear sections apart to figure out what's going on).

Hey. Just figured I could give you something that's a bit more understandable than "this little bit interacts with that little bit to produce these other little bits when the *insert five pages of technobabble* and then everything blows up and your computer dies in flames."
