You'll stack a lot of -def with earth/thorns.
An earth/thorns dom with plenty of -def AOE would help teams tear through most content.
If there's one criticism that I've heard from some about earth/thorns, its that there's more -def than necessary.

My level 50 Dominators:
Madame Mindbender 50 Mind/Energy
Fly Agaric 50 Plant/Thorn
Nate Nitro 50 Fire/Psi
Toxic DoT is nice, but a lot of things that resist Lethal (anything robotic, etc.) will also resist Toxic.
In any case, yes, your -def all stacks. Once you start laying out Quicksand and Earthquake and start hitting them with a couple thorn bursts, your teammates should be able to hit them almost no matter what.
Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.
