Crashing

Back_Blast

I have been out of CoH for about 9 months. PC was running the game, plenty of lag, but playable. Now I return and am crashing when I am in a group on a mission. I get in and begin buffing the party and crash to desktop.

I see that people are having connection issues with i17. I have no problem getting into the game or mission, I just crash when I begin the action.

I am looking for some suggestions as to where to begin diagnosing this problem. Here is some info to work with (I know you tech guys love some data to work with!), I can provide more if someone has any ideas...

OS: Windows XP Profesional v5.1 with service pack 3
Brain: Pentium 4 2.53GHz with 1024MB of RAM
Vid: GeForce 7600GS with 512MB (drivers: 6.14.0011.8208) - Direct X- 9.0c
Sound: Soundblaster Audigy 2(B400) (drivers: 5.12.0001.1196)
Wireless mouse (microsoft)
Connection: Optonline Router: Lynksys wireless router with 1G transfer rate.
Antivirus: Avira antivirus
Also I use Xfire during the game and sometimes Herostats and Glycerine.

Thanks for the time!

I would start with updating your video drivers. They are a bit old.

And when giving system information, it's a good idea to use CoH Helper.
It provides system information as well as your game settings.

Ok...Updated Video Drivers and Sound drivers (not shown on report, just did them), and ran CoH Helper. Here is the info:

Have you tested if the updated drivers have done any difference?

Besides that, the only thing that I see, is that you only have 1 GB memory.
That means it will use a swap file on the hard-disk, so I would suggest to increase the swap file to 3 GB, and also do a de-fragmentation of your hard-disk for optimal performance.

And a last thing. Decrease maximum particles to 10.000 or so. I don't think you can see any difference and it should save some resources.

Edit: close all other programs to save memory. A HiJackThis will show what is running in your machine.

The game runs smoother already, but light loads and havent run in a group yet. I will do that today. I defraged it last night. I will try the particles and swap file settings. The Swap was set to 2056 MB I can up it to 3072MB.

Thanks!

Interesting: Everything works fine except now I get a full game freeze up during missions for exactly 30seconds every 5 min. It's too mechanical of a schedule so something has to be causing it.

I am thinking it could be Xfire, my chat program. Anyone else have a similar issue or problems with xfire??

Posted

It could be some program that's polling for updates. Time it to see if it happens exactly at 5 minute intervals. Run a malware scan, check your running programs and services.

You can run msconfig and disable all non MS services and startup programs, reboot then try again.

Posted

Oh it's EXACTLY 5 min to the second. Only problem is, it only happened in CoH so far. I haven't had a freeze up anywhere else... I will have to CSI this problem. Maybe I can pinpoint it.

Run a HijackThis report and perhaps we can help point you at it. http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

After a long investigation, I believe I have found the problem. In my startup menu was the old ISUSPM.exe. My research shows it to be an install shield update service, which can cause freeze ups as it connects to the internet to search for updates and such. After shutting it down things seem to be fine.

Playing in a full out group tonight, so I will see for sure if that was it...

Well, after 2 and 1/2 hours straight in a full group the freeze began happening again. I am out of ideas. Here is the Hijack This report, done today (5/6/10), after a full virus scan on system. Hope someone has some ideas!! And yes there is alot running, but I'm not always sure what to shut down or how to.... Thanks for any help..

The exact same symptom as before or different somehow? And you're sure it didn't start till 2.5 hours of play?

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Exact same thing... The game no longer crashes, I thnk the video/sound card driver updates did the trick.

Now it's a 30sec. freeze (complete) every 5 minutes. We started at 8 and I had no problems till 10:30 (I also didnt take a death till it froze in a battle!!). At 10:30, freeze up. Now the last time it happened, it happened for 30 sec. every 5 minutes, but it happened the moment I logged in and it was in the AM...

PS: am on now with no probs. It seems to start when I team up and enter a mission...but I dont know...

Sounds like some further testing is in order. If it consistently seems linked to playing for awhile rather than starting up as soon as you log in then I'd tend to think it isn't necessarily any background processes. Though you can certainly try turning off any that you don't absolutely need to play and see what happens.

Thought I would leave an update in case anyone else is browsing for help with a similar problem.

The problem seems to be fixed. Here is what I did:

Raised the swap file and ran virus scan / updates / defrag. I then went and stopped any update programs from running on a scheduled time.

I was worried about my processor temp also so I put another fan on it.

That helped but didn't fix it.

Later I updated my mouse driver: In the past I had a problem with CoH freezing. It turned out that CoH didn't like my Logitech mouse. I switched to a Microsoft mouse and that fixed the problem.

After that I gave Coh.exe and Cohupdater.exe direct access through the firewall and unplugged from my router and directly into my modem.

Now the freeze is gone.

I've had a similar problem with I17, in both beta and live versions, something about Mercy Island causes the game to crash for me, often before even loading a character. It seems to be connected the the recovery station in Fort Darwin, going anywhere even vaguely near it triggers the crash, as does trying to load a toon that has crashed there already. Different toons, different outfits, powersets, different graphics settings, Ultra Mode on or off, different servers, none of that has any effect, just going past that one area of Mercy. I have tried one toon that's in Sharkhead, and had no difficulty. The only additional info I can offer is that I always get the same error message about instruction 0x6904b8a3 referencing memory 0x00000034 that could not be "read" (the quotes are part of the error message, not sure if they are relevant). I've tried verifying my files repeatedly, to no avail.

I'm on a Mac, using Bootcamp to run XP, if someone could tell me how to look up my Windows drivers I would would be glad to post them.
