Razer death?

My trusty Razer Copperhead mouse seems to be giving up the ghost - the pointer doesn't seem to correlate too well to the mouse movement/position

I've had non-gaming mouses fail in this way but I've generally filed them in the round file under B. This I'm reluctant to... it's only 2.5 years old and I can't afford to replace easily. Is it fixable?

If not, what alternative choices do I have if it comes to consigning it to the great mouse graveyard to the sky?

If you want to stick with Razer, the Death Adder is still one of their cheaper models at about $60. Or perhaps the Imperator for $80? Dunno if they're out of your price range currently, but both are great mice.

And I'm in the same boat. Looking at getting the Imperator myself since my Logi MX-518 is dying a slow death. The left click is starting to go, the wheel is getting overly sensitive and its generally getting worn down after a little over 2 years.

Not sure I'm wedded to Razor.. just tested it on Fedora and it works fine so something's a bit borked. I've updated Firmware but no effect

How long did you use it in Fedora? I've had cords start breaking (internally) just where they exit the mouse (or on that wonderful Microsoft design, where it's cranked around in a tight 90 degree curve with no strain relief, inside the mouse) and had them work "just fine" for a while, then flake out. (If there's any sort of light indicators on top of the mouse, such as for sensitivity, watch if they flicker out.)

Otherwise, if there's any related software/drivers, uninstall them and see if it behaves any better.

(Mouse history - MS optical mice, Logitech G7 - replaced, button weirdness, G5 - RMAd for a G500. I go through them more quickly than I'd like thanks to the cords.) I generally like logitech's mice, TBH.

The erratic behavior can be caused by a small hair or other detritus on the lens, have you tried cleaning it?

2.5 years is considerably longer than I get out of a mouse; generally I replace my mouse every 12-18 months. My keyboard is typically worse; I replace it annually.

I haven't used a wired mouse in years though... that cord drives me nuts getting in the way. Currently I'm using a Logitech MX-1100 8 button cordless and I've yet to have an issue with the mouse-receiver signal. I do have the receiver on my desktop however with the USB extension cable Logitech supplies instead of plugged into the back of the machine. I really like the cordless Logitech; I just toss a pair of AA batteries in every couple of months. I've been using similar mice for years now... it's in the $80 price range though.

(8 button... 3 thumb buttons, right, left, wheel down, rock wheel left & right)

Thanks for the info peoples.

Cross fingers I think I've fixed it... a clean and upgrade of the firmware - there does seem to be something of a cavity behind the lens so gently teasing out some cat hair from there may have been the fix.

Here's hoping and thanks again

Cats and mice don't always get along.
