..of course maya seems to always been used by the professionals...
but max seems to always be the favorate of people that work on 3d images..

..course NOW that they have an importer for Daz and Poser that lets you input your
creations into max or maya, with all the bells and whistles.. theres got to be some
strong attaction for someone to use one or another..

personally I think maya has a stronger renderer.. however max has more plugins and user-made addins for there software..

kinna thinking that max would be like windows xp, and maya would be like a Mac

I'd love to help you as I've been using 3dsmax for a number of years. But since I have never used Maya, I can't really give you a proper logical reason to choose one over the other.

But my biased self says go with Max

It's hard to compare the two and determine a definite better program. At my school, we use both depending on which major. I'm in Game Art and we use 3DS Max exclusively. From what we're told, Max is used more by game developers, while Maya is used more in the SFX and movie industry. Although one of our teachers works for Schell games and they use Maya there, so that's not even a sure bet.

Also, since Maya got assimilated by Autodesk, they've slowly become more like Max anyway. If I had to choose which program to use and didn't already know how to use Max, I'd still probably choose Max since Autodesk is more likely to give Max new features before Maya since it's their "baby".

As for rendering, you can get great results out of anything if you know how to set it up. And then there's also the option of using separate rendering programs, like Marmoset (which is a game engine that does renders).

I've used Maya, didn't quite like it. Seemed more to be an animation tool than a strong 3D modelling program.

I personally prefer Alias Studiotools, but thats mostly cause it was the program i learned to do 3d models in.

never used 3d studio max.
