BotZ and Regen (Defense in General)
Regen is awesome with SOs. It is made more awesome with some defense, even with just 26%.
My Fire/Fire tank was happy with the +def he got before BoTZ was even introduced. And he got stuck in the 25ish range. When defense debuffs are not prevalent, he's extra tough. When there are, the defense still serves as an extra layer of protection.
Remember, you can be in the negative defense range.
I still appreciate the defense on my MA/Regen. It's far from soft-capping, but the +30% melee defense has really helped keep the toon alive when my /Regen powers are not enough, and I don't even use the BotZ sets on this particular build.
Yeah, the extra defense does help significantly even if it's not close to soft-capping. Other than global recharge, building for defense on a /Regen is hardly a bad idea.
I'm assuming most of you are aware of the adjustment to the IO set, Blessing of the Zephyr. At some point, it's set bonuses will be reduced to 1.25% Ranged, and 1.88% AOE.
With this change taking place, I'm curious what my fellow scrappers think about slotting for defense on Regen. As I see it, Dark/ and Sword sets will still have reason to do so, but the other combination I'm not so sure about. Before I was just barely making 30% Ranged with the PVP IO, and now I'm around 26%, which is more realistically placed at 23%. I imagine others will have a much more difficult time still, and with the myriad of enemies throwing out defense debuffs I'm having a hard time rationalizing defense on /regen. |
Regen is all about having time to recover heals, and the less stuff hits you, the longer you can go before you really need a heal again. Combined with some good +recharge, I totally think it's worth it.

Where BotZ is concerned, while I still like the set, I'm no longer going to be going out of my way to slot it. This doesn't mean it's no longer a good set. It simply means that it's no longer a set that you're going to want to go out of your way to slot for.
Bah.. forget survival... build for damage. You got a self rez.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

So what do others think, yay or nay on defense building for regen and other secondaries which do not possess native defense? If nay, what might you build for instead?
