Enter RWZ 15-30 Second Freeze

I'm getting frequent graphics hitches (the entire screen freezes, the mouse pointer is still responsive), then 15-30 seconds later, I'm back. if its longer then my game freezes.

Also when i come back. the graphics are wacked out. Sharp points everywhere. like everything exploded. I even have Rainbow colors on metallic surfaces.

I can go to Menu. Options. and move my settings up to max. click apply. and it fixes it. then i can change it back to Which ever setting i want.

My fans are all running fine. and the card is not hot.

It has been happening since the graphic update in some zones. Currently it is RWZ that is affecting me.

Nothing is immediately jumping out at me, but I do have a suggestion..

Instead of resetting your graphic preferences every time, have you tried /reloadgfx? That might reset/fix it for you without bothering your settings at all. You can even bind it to a key for quick access if it becomes a big problem.

On a side note, that type of behavior doesn't sound good. It seems like a hardware failure/problem, but if that's the only location that gives you a problem, that's a bit odd indeed.

Its just odd because the card isnt even a year old.

Well I'm not saying it actually is a hardware problem, but it's a possibility. Some minor defects in cards could take some time before they eventually show up visually... or incorrect power/cooling has caused slight damage over the past year that eventually led to a problem. I don't see any obvious problems with your setup from the information you have given so far, but another person might, so it's worth waiting for the 2nd and 3rd opinions. lol

I can't see information from a "HiJack This" report having much impact on this behavior, but it might be worth running that and posting it as well so other people can look for an issue there too. You never know.

Did you try the "/reloadgfx" command yet? How did it work out?

Just as a note: the way RWZ was "built", it tends to have texture-pop and take a second to draw itself in when you first enter - even on strong systems.

What I meant was, does using that command actually fix it for you, even if only temporarily? At least it could save you from having to reload options and do all the other steps you were doing before.

I'm not an expert, but that looks like an over heating card.

Posted

I am an expert... well not really but I've had multiple experiences with seeing that. It's definitely a failing card and almost certainly happens when the card overheats.

You say the card is not running hot. What is the temperature of the card and what program are you using to read it? Are you sure you aren't just looking at the motherboard temperature.

Also, as a card gets progressively worse it starts to glitch at lower and lower temperatures. A few years back when my 7900gt started to glitch like that I set the fan to 100% every time I played the game and I was able to eke out another month of play. But that card is about to go out in a blaze of glory.

On the bright side this gives you a good excuse to upgrade for GR.

Well.... SpeedFan is only detecting HD0 at 91F

Its not seeing any voltages, or fans or other temps.... Bah.

are you sure it isn't 91C. if it is, your card is running at 195.8F. Celsius is what any program i know of that reads temps reads in. you have a card that is going bad. remember that electronics are not perfect and can be brand new in the box and not work right from the start.

SpeedFan has the option to use C or F. I just changed mine to F as a comparison, and it reports 90F for the Hard Drive as well, which is about 32C, nice and cool... and normal.

HalfSlice, if you are not seeing any voltages or other temps, you might have to click Configure and enable a few more devices. It seems strange to me that SpeedFan would default you to just the harddrive.

It does not have an option to enable other devices. Unless they are already listed with check boxes

I might have misread but knowing the temperature of a hard drive will not help you with an overheating graphic card.

Speedfan should be able to tell you the temp of the graphic card itself ( unless it doesn't have a sensor) and by past experience, what you are seeing is often caused by a overheating card.

edit: sorry just re-read the post and I missed the part where you say no other temp are showing. Still you could always pull the graphic card out and make sure there is no dust in the heat-sink and fan.

Yes i did that already. The fan and card is all clean. A little normal dust on the card fan blades. But nothing out of the ordinary. Usually it happens if the fan on cards isnt running. But this one is so i am confused.....
