I've been doing some reading and slowly i've been learning a bit more about the class and such but its still a bit confusing since I haven't even been playing a week yet. I could use some advice on picking a power set though considering i'm not sure whats good for what really. I plan on mostly playing in groups and I Was hoping for some great aoe powers (Damage or otherwise)

Anyone think they can help me out?

Doms are very fun (I have 6, assuming I'm not forgetting about anybody ). Did you have any thoughts as to what type of character you'd like to play, or what type of playstyle you'd like? And are you going to be playing solo or teamed mostly? And if so, what with?

There's a lot of variation in how you can play doms, depending on the powersets you take.

For example, I have a (50 perma-dom) fire/fire, who plays like a psycho-blapper. Her playstyle is very fast-paced and frenetic, but it took a lot of work to get her to the point where she can wade into a x8 spawn without thinking twice. She gets a lot of AOE from her Hot Feet, 3 Fire Imps, and Combustion, and strong single target damage from everything else. Fire/Psy used to be the king of AOE (and was the main combination used by farmers), but I don't know if that's still the case since Psy was rebalanced a couple of issues back.

At the other end of the spectrum, I have my 35 grav/elec. Gravity doesn't have a lot of control, but it's fun to use, and Elec is a largely single-target set, so she's slower and more tactical. My 26 mind/psy is also a similar playstyle, but Mind control is *very* control-heavy, so it's a very safe set.

Well I was planning on mostly be doing things in groups and such, other than ther eI don't think I know enough to go into detail on what I want. I simply noticed that many things seem to group up and I thought "It'd be fun to blow them up all at once!" so I was wanting to focus on an aoe type of character and my friend suggested Dom. Also I eventually want to work towards being a perma dom but I heard that take alot of time and money so I figure that can wait.

Basicly all I want to do is do a lot of aoe while in groups, whether I'm doing damage or debuffs or a bit of both.

Patience LD, some of us only just got up.

You may wish to look down the user guides for Dominators, listed here:

Personally, I found this one a very good overview of the Archetype although it is quite out of date now and missing the recently added Earth Control/Earth Assault sets. However in terms of your role in a team and what types of powers to look for, the advice is still sound. Just ignore the bit about us being low damage.

First toon I Ever rolled Grav/Fire...

She is currently Level 50 and a L2 permadom I could drop another purple set into her and make her L3... but Meh she triple stacks domination with out outside buffs.

Gravity Control is probably the least Flashy of the control sets due to the minimal effects, comparatively to the others, the effects are kinda subdued.

Dominators are possibly the hardest set to learn how to play... target switching is your friend.

But I digress, As far as what powers to pick. You need to pick what set suits you better.

well i'm trying to figure out what suits me best but I don't really know what each power has to offer. I looked them over and they all seem really simular

Gravity control--not recommended for casual learning Dominator awesomeness. Unless you like having keyboard shaped dents in your face or you are already bald. Propel is by far the most amusing power in the game but it's animation is painfully long. Only picked for the giggle factor. (late bloomer)

Fire Control- flashy high damage and fairly easy to learn.

Plant Control- two words Poison Ivy... I could go with vagina dentata as well but anyway.

Ice control- Ice Slick is evil and very very amusing.

Earth Control- loud messy and alot of fun

Mind Control - Professor X on a really really bad day.

If you cant pick roll a d6 and take your chances.
