AFAIK it will still be there until you return. I've never heard of a SG being deleted due to inactivity in the past, so you should be okay. 
As long as it is just your and your wife's Characters, you should be fine.
If there are any others, I'd same make sure none are higher than rank 4 and that you and/or your wife have at least a couple rank 5s, so that someone trusted has the Rank 6.

If there are any members of the SG that belong to some other player, then as soon as firespray's accounts go inactive past the max time limit (45 days) the next player to log on will gain the big red star. An active players rank has no bearing on whether they will gain Super Leader status, if the Super Leader and Leaders go inactive.
Otherwise they are safe and they could come back after a year and nothing will be changed.
Just to clarify this last bit:
If the OP and his wife are the only people with any characters in the SG, there is no danger. The group will still be there just as you left it when you return.
However, if there are any characters at all belonging to any other players and said players log in during your absence, they gain control of the SG and could do anything they wished (including destroy the group entirely).
So just make sure, before you go inactive, that there aren't any characters belonging to other people. I would kick inactive characters that aren't yours or your wife's just to be safe, with a polite in-game email explaining the kick if you feel it necessary.

Due to some circumstances beyond our control, my wife and I will both be taking a break from the game for awhile.
The two of us created a personal supergroup for our own use, and I'm wondering what will happen to it if we both let our accounts become inactive (i.e. all the characters in the group will be on inactive accounts). Will the supergroup still exist? Will we lose any salvage/enhancements we have stored in the supergroup?
