In my experience it indicates sleep. But to be fair, much of the time that I noticed such things had been during my tenure as a FF defender, and thus sleep was about the only mez going on around me.

I have, however, occasionally noted people saying "stunned", "held", or "mezzed" while I was playing other characters. For my part, I only point out that I'm mezzed if people are calling for me to do something when I can't or when under the influence of those overly-lengthy stun grenades that the... Malta? use. Despite the sleep hole, I find toggles like Dispersion Bubble infinitely preferably and Clear Mind might likely find its way onto my "top ten worst powers in the game" list.

Such a change would likely mean an increase to endurance and recharge time and a decrease in effectiveness (see World of Pain). In other words, no thanks.

When Duo-ing, or even Trio-ing the single-target version would be prefered. Then what?

As a /ForceFields MM, I would prefer PBAoE versions of my two single-target ally bubbles. But I'm sure that my FF/Energy Defender would be happier to retain hers as single-target, but higher duration plz?

What if there was a way for characters to cast the same power two different ways? With, let's say Deflection Shield. I take Deflection Shield at the trainer. In the Enhancement Management screen, it shows up as one power with two side-by-side icons. Slot it to taste.
In my powers bar, there are two seperate Icons. One for a single-target buff, one for a PBAoE.
The balance? The PBAoE costs a lot of End, but gets everyone in the AoE (self-excluded). The Single-target version is low-end, but has a greater range.
