Broadsword is good damage. Use Parry liberally and you don't even need a secondary. The main strength of fire is it's heal (Healing Flames).
All scrappers can solo well. The sword scrappers (broadsword and katana) in particular can shine since they add defense to help you get through the slower levels (the teens).

BS/Fire should be a solid combo.
I have a BS/DA that rocks the house, and on the surface Fire and Dark are somewhat similar powersets. You will need KB protection in either set. They are largely resistance based with a nice heal power. Both have damage auras. But from there they start to differ.
Broadsword/Fire has the potential to unleash some truly devastating attacks in 10 second increments, due to the fact that it gets 2 Build Up powers (Fiery Embrace is the other). It also has an endurance recovery power (Consume). It's Tier 9 is a self rez that damages nearby enemies (Dark has a self rez that stuns them, butyou need to have enemies nearby to use it)
All in all, it should be a nice combo for solo play.

Sounds like a great combo, just be sure to pick up consume early, as it also sounds endurance heavy.
I agree with what has been said, especially on endurance management.
Besure to check-out Achilles' Heel Proc for your most commonly used single target attack as well as saving up for some knockback protection or looking at jump pool for acro (at least temporarily) as fire's lack of KB protection can be mildly annoying.

I'm leveling up a Martial Arts/Fire. It was my best attempt at making a scrapper that sucks. Unfortunately, I was able to bump the difficulty from a very early level, and he's been a blast to play.
Anyway, yeah, Broad Sword/Fire should be good. Fire is one of the squishier secondaries, but like Shred Monkey said, "Use Parry liberally and you don't even need a secondary." I recommend leading with Parry, even if it's sad not leading with a devastating attack, because the most dangerous part of the fight for you will be the very beginning, before you get your defenses up, and when they're all nailing you with the alpha strike. So lead with Parry, take the alpha strike, heal, then tear them apart. (Note: I don't have a BS/Fire. I'm making an educated guess on tactics based on my Katana/Dark, which should play fairly similarly.) Slot Parry largely as an attack, though maybe a purple or two. For extra defense and resistance, pick up Combat Jumping or Hover, and Tough and Weave.

The reason I went with BS is like you guy said. Solid ST damage, and more importantly, Parry. Which would help a lot in early levels, and even on later levels where a ton of the ranged attacks have a lethal component in them. Combined with a resistance based secondary that should make for nice survivability. And the fact that Fire Armor has both a heal and an End recovery power makes it even better. And yeah, for the KB protection thing I have a couple Steadfasts stored in my base, level 10s. So those can be used in my shields very early to help with that.

So, been playing with the idea of a complete solo toon - from 1 to 50 solo. And I chose a Broadsword/Fire Armor scrapper. Is a good idea? Bad? Any suggestions on the build? Just to provide a hint on my playing --, I've never played either power sets before.
