Traps/DP Defender vs. DP/Traps Corrupter

So I have a concept in mind as an alternate version of my DP/Devices Blaster, but as someone inexperienced with support Archetypes, I have a question about Traps. It's very offense oriented, compared to things like Empathy and Force Field, and has much fewer buffs and mezzes than most support sets. I know that this was because it was designed for Corrupters, which are not a full on support AT, but a hybrid.

With this in mind, is there any reason to make a Traps/DP Defender when I will soon have the ability to make a DP/Traps Corrupter and bring it Blueside? I figure that what little Traps and Leadership (which I'm probably going to take) get boosted from having a Defender will more than be offset by lesser damage from bombs and seeker drones, not to mention the guns themselves. Am I correct in this assumption?

You overestimate the damage in Traps. It's still primarily a debuff set - Trip Mine and Time Bomb are the only "damage" powers in the set, and Time Bomb is fairly universally accepted as being complete rubbish.

Defenders have significantly higher numbers for the -tohit, +defence, -defence, -resist, and other such (de)buffing aspects (33% higher, to be precise) than Corrupters have.

That said, the Corrupter is almost certainly going to "feel" more like a Blaster because of Scourge - before Scourge, the difference in damage isn't that much (about 15%.)

Just for the record, I'm not really looking for it to feel like a blaster. If I want that, I have the blaster :P. I guess maybe I should try playing a Defender then.

Defenders are a hybrid to, they are just more support focused while Corruptors are more damage focused.

Overall, Corruptors do about 11.5% more damage (neglecting Scourge) while Defenders have 13% to 33% stronger buffs (depending on buff type, most of the Traps ones are at the higher end of the scale). Overall I would say it depends on how you play. If you mostly team then I would say go Defender, your teammates will really appreciate your stronger buffs. If you solo then go Corruptor, the extra scourge damage makes soloing a lot easier.

Both will solo quite well though. Traps is one of the stronger soloing sets for Defenders since you are pretty tough (yay FFG and Seekers) and have better damage due to Acid Mortar.

One other thing to note is that the damage difference between the Defender and Corruptor versions of Trip Mine and Time Bomb are a lot higher than 11.5%. The reason for this is that these powers work by summoning a pseudo-pet and when the devs made Traps they did a direct port of the Blaster versions of the pseudo-pet rather than making new ones. So Corruptor Trip Mine and Time Bomb deal Blaster level damage but don't Scourge.
