Potential Graphic Card Issue?

Not sure if this is the right place to be asking these questions but we do have some smart people here...

Just today, whenever I would start a game, the screen will go pink and wavy and lockup. Restarting the computer just leave that wavy patterns on the screen until I get to the bootup for Windows and I get a BSoD saying that my graphic card got into an "Infintie Loop" or something like that and does a memory dump.

I can only access windows regularly if I go into safe mode, disable my graphic card, then restart my computer to boot like normal.

I am able to restart my graphic card and everything work unless if I try to play any games that require a graphic card (All of them).

Updating the drivers doesn't do anything or rolling it back. The problem still persist and BSoD said it could either be my drivers, which I disproved, or damage to my graphic card.

Said Graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS on my Dell Dimension XPS 720 (I know, Dell evil, get it out of your system).

Do I need to replace my graphic card, and if so, to what?

before you go out and buy a new card, do you have an older card around that you can test first?

This really sounds like there's something more seriously wrong than your graphics card, such as potential problem with your powersupply or motherboard.

If the powersupply isn't able to generate enough oomph, that would cause the lockouts. If there's a problem with the motherboard not being able to pump enough power through the PCIE slot, that would also cause issues.

So if you can test with another card first, that may answer whether or not this is a Power Supply, Motherboard, or a GPU issue.

Only got the one.

If it was a powersupply issue, wouldn't it have come up before?

The whole BSOD thing doesn't scream power supply at me. If it was P/S, I'd expect the system to just hang or ASR rather than BSOD.

It could be MoBo, maybe. I'd be willing to bet it's probably GFX card though.

It'd help if I knew the EXACT error message rather than a vague half-remembered approximation.

I'll get a piece of paper and transcribe it then...

Depends if you've got a p/s that's gone flakey. It doesn't sound like a power supply issue to me, but it's probably an inexpensive fix if you're in doubt.

You can also pick up a cheapie graphics card for under $50 and slap it in the PC to see if that one flakes on you too. If it does, then it's not a GFX card. If it doesn't, it probably is.

Be sure to grab the STOP code. Will be something like 0x000000AB or something

Ok, finally back. Here's what I could transcribe that my mushy brain could handle.

A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent further damge.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp

The device driver got stuck in a infinite loop. This usally indicate a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver update.

Here's the KB article for it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293078

Quote:
This issue occurs if the graphics adapter is caught in an infinite loop while it waits for the video hardware to become idle. This can indicate that there is a problem with the video hardware, or that the graphics adapter cannot program the hardware correctly.

The Stop error message may also occur in video adapter drivers that do not represent a physical device. For example, this Stop error message may occur in the virtual video adapter driver that is used by Symantec PCAnywhere. If PCAnywhere is installed on a computer where this error message occurs, visit the Symantec Web site to determine whether there are any available fixes for your version of PCAnywhere.
The suggestions from Microsoft from this error do suggest trying different drivers (which you've done), and replacing the graphics card (which you appearently are looking to do).

One of the other codes does turn an error on Nvidia's forums: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...ded&pid=548883

But... there's no answer, unofficial or otherwise.
