Have you uninstalled the older version? I believe going from ver. 1.4 to the current 1.6 without uninstalling 1.4 will cause the issue you're seeing.

Sounds like it could be a permissions issue. What is the error message that you get? And have you tried a fresh install instead of an update?

Mids does not update from within the program yet (IIRC, permissions and other programming junk). You must manually download new installations to get updated.
