What to aim for in a Fire/Fire?

Adeon Hawkwood

Still struggling along, determined to build a Fire/Fire/Fire that I want to keep and play.
Mostly at the moment the concept is holding me back. But I have real trouble finding a build that feels solid, and not like its a frankenstein of different goals.

Should I aim for +damage, +recharge, recovery, health, or def? Anyone know anything thats easier to achieve and/or 'better' than others?
Any help is majorly appreciated.

It depends a bit on your playstyle but I'd build towards a mix of recharge and defense with a little bit of recovery. Fire/Fire/Fire is somewhat lacking in mitigation so a defense heavy IO build is probably the way to go.

Playstyle basically being; 'If it moves, burn it. If it doesn't move, burn it for the heck of it anyway.'

Fire/Fire/Ice can easily reach the S/L softcap, which is probably the most sensible choice for solo and team play.

I can empathise with wanting to stick to Fire*3, but your goal is going to be high recharge (to nuke, consume and rez often) and endurance (to keep hot feet going). Low levels of Def aren't really worth it in my experience.

There's a thread on Fire Combustion in this forum that's well-worth reading.

You can build for, and fairly-easily reach, the Blaster HP cap. Building for Regen is much less helpful than just getting Aid Self (esp. if you're high Recharge).

+Damage on a Blaster is less efficient than +Recharge due to Aim, BU and Defiance (and any other team buffs).

My recharge-build is below, although I don't actually have the Armageddon proc. You could prolly perma-hasten with purple slotting, but I didn't think the build needed it.

RoF can be switched for Fire Breath, as you prefer. Burn can be switched for Fire Sword, and Crushing Impact will keep the same Recharge bonus as the Oblits.

This is a pure glass cannon, an absolute beast in team-play, but a real challenge solo

Hmm, so is Hot Feet worth it? I hear mixed views on it, that and Blazing Aura, although Im less likely to get the aura.

Hot Feet is - apart from pure DPS - your only real source of mitigation. It can get mobs to flee melee range (slowly), which is where you'll face your worst damage. I think it's also the primary reason that Fire/Fire edges out Fire/MM for AoE DPS.

It's not brilliant, but it does make a difference once you learn how and when to use it.

Blazing Aura is just horribly, horribly bad

Duly noted, I'll keep that in mind.
Is it worth taking Tough/Weave, given I plan to stick to Fire/Fire/Fire? (I want RotP )

I'd say not, because of the additional Endurance drain for the relatively-limited Def/Res gain. Both Fire/* and */Fire are End-heavy sets already. YMMV though.

Fire/Fire does not have especially strong synergy, but pulls through on the massive power of the primary alone. It is very possible to neglect your entire secondary except Build Up and still be effective.

Build goals are usually defense and/or recharge. Going with defense presents the problem that if you are also taking the Fire APP you can't softcap S/L defense, and if you go with positional defense you need to chose whether to focus on range or melee.

Hot Feet is OK. It's a huge (20ft; for comparison Blaster PBAoE nukes are 25ft) damage aura that does significant damage and also slows (the slow is slottable, unlike Rain of Fire's). Note that, contrary to the description, it does work in the air, though you can only toggle it on the ground. If you play often in melee, it's a good source of damage that does not eat up precious seconds of animation time. Blazing Aura is harder to justify due to the much smaller radius and IIRC, it also costs more endurance than it should for the damage it does.

Tough + Fire Shield is 45% S/L resistance, which is significant. Weave can be worth it if it gets you to some important defense milestone. The problem with Tough/Weave is that trying to run them in addition to Hot Feet and other high-cost damage auras puts a heavy strain on your endurance. Make sure your build can handle it before going this route.

Do you really want to curb those Tanker instincts? How often do you team? How often do you team with people you trust?

Here are some possible changes. I got a bit more recharge and a lot more end recovery. It slots the Hot Feet for damage or it gets the hose. I'd consider Hurdle instead of Swift. Ring of Fire, unlike other blaster secondary tier 1 powers, does great damage.

I like to have some Heal slotting in RotP, but I kept all 5 Oblits for the 5% global recharge (I was thinking maybe 3 Oblits and 2 Numinas).

Hmm, I *do* like that -saves-
Thanks for the feedback, Im slightly stuck in some old ways, like not slotting Set IOs in Build up and Aim, forgetting that the recharge boosts from other parts all negate the lost stuff.

I'm sorry, but I think this a dreadful build for a Fire/Fire/Ice.

You've missed the obvious S/L softcap and instead gone for ~29% S/L, 19% Melee, 18% Ranged and 4% AoE. The usual idea is to go for S/L or Positional Def.

You skipped Weave, your strongest Def(all) possibility.

Maxxing out Tough makes sense when you're pairing it with another Res EPP armour, but it seems wasteful here.

Your three basic "mezzed" attacks can make a huge difference to your DPS, but you've skipped Fire Blast and essentially left Ring of Fire unslotted.

You got the fun, but un-vital Snipe and the hideously-slow Combustion, neither of which are helping your DPS situation. I'm not sure why you even have Consume, given its slotting.

Your Endurance must be a major problem when running HF. You have a 0.85 end/s effective recovery at those points, which is nowhere near enough to handle Fire's high-endurance attacks.

Stealth is an odd choice since half of the Def suppresses in combat and it costs quite a bit to run. If you switch it for CJ, you'll get the exactly same Def benefit for almost no Endurance cost, and you'll probably find combat movement (as well as general travel) a lot easier.

If you're wanting a Stealth option to pair with Super Speed, slot a Stealth Proc in Sprint and toggle it on for ghosting.

I'm not going for softcapped defense.

It's a balance between defense and recharge. That's about as much recharge as I want to sacrifice for the defense.

Right now the build is pure recharge focused (fire/fire/fire)

Combustion is just for the slotting and exemp play (it's like the only AOE u have at lvl15)

I hate ring of fire. It's just my playstyle. I've tried to like it, I really have. But i hate it.

Hotfeet is situational use. When i need to chew up a truckload of baddies in a world full of decent mitigation.

Consume is for nuke recovery/hotfeet recovery.

Stealth is for the proc.

Flares is underslotted. As a 1.125 damage mod AT you want to try and get ED-capped (or close to it) damage on all attacks. Drop some other attacks to free up slots if you must. Fewer well-slotted attacks > many badly-slotted attacks.

Posiblast overdoses on damage and is anemic on recharge. Standard slotting, if you are using level 50 Posiblasts, is 5 Posiblasts (dropping either the Dam/Range, Acc/Dam or Dam/End depending on the power) and 1 recharge common IO.

3-slotting health isn't worth it. You'd be better served foregoing the HP bonus for a miracle unique.

Don't 6-slot Armageddon; the 6th slot bonus isn't worth it and will cost you another 200 to 400 million and placed in Inferno the proc won't fire often, if at all. Actually if you want to invest in a purple set I recommend Apocalypses since you're already at the limit for 6.25 recharge bonuses.

Hot Feet is an attack, therefore it should be slotted like one: accuracy, damage, endurance.

You really want a -KB IO somewhere, or you risk being knocked out of position when aiming PBAoE attacks.

You're not stacking substantial defense bonuses of any sort so drop the Lockdown in Char and replace it with 4 Basilisk's Gaze for the 7.5 recharge bonus.

Instead of Burn I would take Fire Sword Circle. Burn has a lot of problems, mainly that it's a tiny-radius DoT that does Tanker scale damage. FSC is slower, but does heavy burst damage (it's almost the same damage as Fire Breath) and has a larger (10ft vs 8ft) radius.

Note that if this is a levelling build you will not have enough slots to take and slot 6 attacks before level 20. If you have not made the character, I strongly recommend delaying 1 AoE to your 20s or beyond. Fire Breath + Ball is enough AoE for the low-level game.

My example. You have about 10% more recharge, FSC instead of Burn and are about 2 hitpoints short of the HP cap with all accolades, a Miracle unique, Flares and Hot Feet have better damage enhancement and better recharge in fireball. I gave you a range enhancement in Fire Breath (the increased cone size is very noticeable). You also have a -KB IO (very useful since you do not want to be pushed out of place when positioning your PBAoE attacks). This build will cost you about 2bn, which is comparable to your earlier build. I removed the Ribosomes which should save you a few hundred million. The most expensive pieces are the Apocalypse (minimum 1.2bn for the set) and the Obliterations, so if you're looking to cut costs I would start there. I finish with my customary observation that you can use level 35 IOs for most of this build while sacrificing very little performance.

I'm a big proponent of "moderate defense, extreme recharge". What I don't quite understand is how you seem to have gone for a mix of S/L, melee and ranged defense, though. Dropping the ranged defense in particular would free up some valuable room to get more recharge.

Your Aim is underslotted and your Consume will have trouble hitting without any accuracy.

My point is that you're building for Ranged, Melee AND S/L Def with both your powers and your set bonuses. You build for either Positional OR Typed Defense; building for both is extremely inefficient.

If you're building for Positional Def, AoE should be your second-highest (after Melee or Ranged, depending on your playstyle).

You get FireBall at lvl 2, RoF at lvl 6, Fire Breath at lvl 8, FSC at lvl 10... I can't even begin to work out why you think Combustion is your only AoE attack before lvl 15.

Consume won't hit often because you didn't give it any Accuracy. It also won't boost you as much as it could because all you have in it is an oddly-chosen Proc.

If you have Stealth solely for the Proc, and never plan on toggling the power on, CJ would still be a better choice because it's "free" Def.

+1 to what Harkness and Laevateinn have said. This build is all over the place. Choose either typed or positional defense and stick with it. I recommend typed because of Ice Shield. If you've got high s/l you've got protection from all melee/ranged/AoE attacks with s/l components anyway.

Swap the Geddons from Inferno to Combustion or better yet, FSC. Purple procs are better in powers with faster recharges. Inferno hits hard enough as is, you'll get much more use out of the set in Combustion/FSC.

Hokai, so, here's the build so far. It looks like anything that got hit with that would be in...shall we say...ashes?
