Need help with Blaster build

I got my first character to 50 (Energy/Energy Blaster) but now what?

I want to start slotting him with the best enhancements but I don't know what to do. Meaning what enhancements to buy, how to slot him correctly and so on and so forth. I am sure that I need to do a respec mish. Have downloaded mids but don't know how to use it. I have read some of the forum posts about this subject but I didn't understand what I read.

If anyone can offer any assistance I would greatly appreciate it.

It all comes down to preferred playstyle I suppose, but this build might give you an idea. It's focus is damage, recovery, recharge and using the range of a blaster, not a blapper build, though it has some added res and def. I also went for the Flame Mastery epic since Bonfire might be a good addition to the knockback heavy primary/secondary, also the added res from Fire Shield could come in handy and Rise of the Phoenix is a blasters best friend if you are going for the debt badge.

It is also quite focused on the setbonuses, perhaps a bit more frankenslotting could be used. It's also based on flight as travel power, but you can easily change that to another that you may prefer. Just copy the codes below and import them into Mid's and you will see the build. It is not the cheapest build but not either the most expensive, sort of medium high cost wise. Me personally I wouldn't put either brawl or Kick in tray.

Good luck.

Oh yes, I have not played an Energy/Energy blaster myself, I only used the secondary so this build is very theoretical.

Energy has some nice opportunities for enhancement and you can pick up some very nice sets on the cheap.

A single full set of kinetic crash strategically slotted will get you 7.5% global recharge and knock back protection.

You can also slot thunderstrikes to build up ranged defense.

The question is how do you want to play him and what kind of approach have you been using to get there. Oh and lets not forget how much inf can you spend ?

I like flight. I am more of a blapper than a true blaster.

PhilBilly,

It looks like you got a couple of responses that while having good information didn't really answer your question.

Let's talk about Mid's first. Assuming that you have it installed / updated correctly, Mid's is a build planning tool. The easiest way to use is to put Mid's into Level-Up mode instead of Dynamic mode. Dynamic and Level-Up are modes that are toggled between each other and they show up as a blue box beneath the Mid's character file title.

Once you toggle on Level-Up mode, select the archetype, primary power set and secondary power sets and start building your hero. You can select primary powers by just clicking on the powers to the left of the screen. The process is fairly similar to how you would respec in the game. As you "level up", Mid's will prompt you to choose new powers and then slots.

After you've completed leveling up, you will have a character with powers and empty slots. If you right-click on an empty slot you can fill the empty with a choice of different enhancements (SOs, HOs, IOs). What I recommend you start doing first is to simply stick with SOs until you get comfortable with the Mid's interface and then practice swapping out those for IOs.

Mid's also does a few other things that are useful. You can import builds from the forums by highlight the data chunk (one is posted in this thread), copy it to your clip board (Ctrl + C) and then select Import from forum post from the Import/Export menu. That will allow you to import any builds you find on the forums into Mid's.

Another thing that's useful is the ability to export the same build once you have completed one. This allows you to solicit feedback and to give others a point of reference.

Most of the builds you see on this forum will be invention origin builds (IOs). If you haven't had experience using them, I'd suggest you read up on them first and also take the tutorial offered at the Steel Canyon university. Here's a good overview: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Inventio...n_Enhancements

Inventions are used by most advanced players because they offer superior enhancement values than what you can get from SOs and because the minor set bonuses they provide by slotting 2 or more of the same set can be stacked with like set bonuses from other sets to provide significant advantages over non-IO using characters. For example, a 3% ranged defense set bonus sound insignificant until you realize that ranged defense set bonuses from other sets can stack with that...it is possible to have a blaster that has 45% ranged defense (a defensive rating as good / better than scrappers) while still maintaining the superior ranged fire power of a blaster.

As the other posters mentioned, set bonuses for recharge, recovery, hit points are also very popular. However, before you start respec'ing your hero, get an understanding of how you want to play and how you want those set bonuses to supplement the strengths of your character.

Also, if you're uncomfortable about using set bonuses, frankenslotting is a very viable option that is an inexpensive way to increase your character's power without spending a fortune. Thank you everyone. I will see what I can come up with in mids and post it here.

Sounds good. One thing to keep in mind is pricing. Mids will allow you to slot any enhancement you want but there is a LOT of difference in pricing. A lot of IOs go for more than 100million each while others can be gotten for less than 1 million. I don't know what your budget is but giving us an idea will make it easier for us to offer advice you can actually use.

EDIT: Also you mentioned being a Blapper. One popular strategy for Blasters is to build up defense using IOs. Most Blasters go for Ranged defense but some Blappers prefer Smashing and Lethal instead. If you go that route then you might want to pickup Cold Mastery since the shield there gives a nice chunk of S/L Defense.

I don't want to limit myself based on funding. I will build slowly over time and earn the influence needed to get the job done over time. I just need a goal to work towards. Then eventually I'll get there.

Fair enough. In that case I would actually recommend designing two builds. One as a budget build that you can afford now and one with all the purples, PvP IOs, HOs and other rare things that you want to work towards. There are an awful lot of ways to build an IO'd character and you may well find that you designed a build that looks good but you don't enjoy playing. If so it's better to find that out before you spend a few billion Inf on the build since respeccing out IOs for resale can get annoying.

In terms of general build advice, the critical thing with IO'ing a character is focus. If you slot sets willy-nilly you'll generally get a bad build. My advice is to pick one or two bonuses to focus on and go from there.

Bonuses that work well as a focus for Blasters:
Ranged Defense (if you prefer to fight at range)
Smashing and Lethal Defense (if you prefer to fight both at range and in melee)
Recharge
Regen and Hit Points (not something I care for but I know people who make it work

Set Bonuses you'll probably want to pick up in some quantity but not focus on:
Recovery
Accuracy

Set Bonuses that are nice to have if you can get them but are not a great idea for your focus:
Melee/AoE defense (if you're focusing on Ranged Defense
Other Typed Defenses (if you're focusing on S/L Defense)
Damage (some people focus on, but I find the damage bonuses aren't high enough to really help)
