FPS problem

I recently started having a weird problem. When I first log in my fps is fine, running around 30-60 fps depending on whats on the screen. However within a few minutes, which is random, it drops down to single digits. Sometimes it comes back up, most times it doesn't. I have tried updating drivers, defragging, ran spy hunter and avast, downloaded game booster and their free registry/system cleaner and so far nothing works. I even got a new soundcard to move away from the integrated one and a new hard drive with a clean install of windows, only thing i moved over from my old hd was the costume files for coh and some mp3's.

a couple times i have played 2 or more hours with no problems at all tho. Also it will drop down even if im just in the toon select screen.

any suggestions??

make sure your video card is not overheating. check that the fan is spinning freely and blow any dust out of it and your machine.

There are several things that can be causing this:
Video Card needs to be cleaned
Video Card over heating
Video Card not getting enough power
Video Card is not fully seated in slot (rare but it can happen)
Case is keeping in too much heat
Power Supply is weak/old or under powered/or not enough volts on the rails
ISP problems between you and the game server

If all of the above are not the issue, I would suggest getting a new video card.

I'll just add that it does sound like a heat issue but it doesn't have to just be GPU related.

The processor could be overheating and throttling back for example.

I agree with the above statements. I'd suggest you do a serious system-dust-out, and make sure all your cooling fans are spinning when you are running.

A program like Speedfan can monitor temperatures, among many other things.

Previously, while running BOINC, I found it would cause high demand games like CoH and Borderlands to chug a bit. Either shutting it off, or turning off the GPU utilization seemed to help.
