Typed & Positional Defense - Stacking?

You only apply the HIGHEST defense value to any given attack. Meaning:
If you're attacked by a Ranged/Fire typed attack, and you have 35% Ranged Defense, and 20% Fire Defense, you will only use the Ranged Defense value against that attack.

It because of that, though, that shield buffs tend to give both. Also why IO set bonuses that give defense to positional also give some to typed.

As the title asks, do typed (fire, smashing, psi, etc.) and positional (melee, ranged, AoE) defense values stack, or do you only get the benefit of one of them at a time (hopefully the effect of the higher, naturally)?
