Satellite Internet
If I remember correctly, the "work around" is to launch multiple updaters and when one connects, shut the other ones down and use the one that worked.
Another way, if you don't need to patch or verify is to have a 2nd shortcut that is setup to bypass the updater entirely. Make a shortcut to CityofHeroes.exe. Then edit the target line in the shortcut and add at the end " -project coh" (stuff in the quotes, not including the quotes). The space before the - is important.
My install has the game on my D drive in the folder "City of Heroes" so my target line looks like this;
"D:\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh
Father Xmas - Level 50 Ice/Ice Tanker - Victory

It's the satellite latency. The only real way to solve it is to open up a bunch of updaters. Launch the first then when it's running launch a second then a third then etc... When one finally connects then close the rest and start playing.
You can also skip the updater entirely by adding -projectcoh to the end of the target in the updater shortcut. So it looks like this
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh
Then it will skip the updater and connect directly to the game. Every time there is a patch though she will have to go through the updater again to download the patch before she will be able to connect.
EDIT: Curses, beaten by a few seconds. I'll get you and your meddling dog next time you nosy kids... I mean Father Xmas.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
Thanks guys, it's greatly appreciated! I'll pass the info along and let you know how it went!

The multiple updaters worked, she's gotten on! Much thanks again!
Are there any client-side tweaks that can be done to help deal with the lag? (Aside from adding more RAM, which is already in the works.)

Move into space.
The network lag is from a 100,000 mile round trip off of a satellite (50,000 miles each way). That'll add 500-600ms to the ping right there. No amount of system upgrading is going to fix that.

Heh... I was thinking it was that, but I had to ask just in case, cover all bases.
Much thanks!

A friend of mine just got Satellite Net access through HughesNet. She can't even get the launcher to connect (this is on a PC that previously had no issues with playing CoH on a different broadband connection). I remember awhile back that a number of people were having issues with satellite connections, and I haven't been able to find the information here on the new(er) forums. Can someone please point me in the right direction? It would be greatly appreciated!
