corrupt external hd

so after getting a weird crash on coh my external stopped working properly. its slow and has problems accessing files.

what are my options?
its currently fat32 formatted.

Reformat it or convert it?

did you defrag it and disc clean it? also scan it for a virus or other malicious software.

cant scan it as it has corrupted files. what is the disc clean?'
