Pumped up Defence on a Dark / Dark?
Having spent a lot of time lately getting my Shield tank up to the low 40s, I decided to revisit my Dark Dark tank. He was my first 50, and the most fun I had. Now that I know the joy of IOs though, I thought I would take another look at him, and rebuild him from the ground up to see what I can do.
Seems that Resistance based bonuses are damned hard to find in IOs, and Defense is much easier to obtain. But my planning skills, even with the assistance of Mids, are woefully inadequate to the task of trying to hit the soft cap for defence. Can anyone offer any tips on this? I don't have unlimited money for the project, maybe 500 Million right now, though I am willing to work toward a target, so long as its not a multi-billion influence build. |

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
--Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
One very big problem obvious to even a cursory inspection is that the lack of end reduction in your attacks and other high endurance powers (Death Shroud, Dark Regen, Cloak of Fear) is going to flat-line your end bar in no time.
Even with Dark Consumption, the 'big three' end eaters should have at least 50-60% end reduction; currently, Death Shroud has less than 20%!. And although Dark Consumption has a very low end cost, you should be aiming for at least 40% end reduction in Soul Drain and Shadow Maul.
If you're looking for S/L defense, the Obliteration set is not a good choice since it takes 6 slots to get a bonus you could get with, say, 4 Smashing Haymaker at a fraction of the cost. In addition, 6 slots of Oblit (and Eradication) has very little end reduction. I'd recommend that you scrounge the slots to four slot Boxing with another set of Kinetic Combat, which will give you the same S/L def bonus as two sets of Oblit. Then slot Shadow Maul, Death Shroud and Soul Drain with a combination of 3-4 Eradication plus 2-3 slots from another set, heavy on the end reduction.
Any particular reason you took Smite so late? The Fighting Pool can easily be pushed back a level or two so you can get it early. It would also make sense to slot up Cloak of Darkness, since it has the same amount of defense as Weave and any defense you get from CoD you won't have to use bonuses to get.

Excellent points Finduilas, and exactly why I put this up here, and why I am glad you stopped by!
Good points on the Obliteration set requiring 6 to do the job of 4... I'll remake it with that in mind.
Smite late was to fit in another set of Kinetic Combat, not realizing that I could just as easily put those slots into Shadow Punch and get back a power choice... say for Hasten!
I'll take a closer look at the End problem as well... I hate running out of Endurance! Though I managed to get this fellow to 50 without any sets at all (strictly regular IOs for him thus far) and just lots of use of Inspirations. I think you're right though, even in his regular IO build, I have a End Reducer in every single attack... so I need to rethink that a lot.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

I've gone a bit different direction with this toon. She isn't completely IO'd out yet but she does quite well so far. Right now she's sitting at 30% defense s/l and 70% resist s/l. The end recovery is good enough that I can run medium length fights with Super Speed running. Long fights I end up turning off SS and use Dark Consumption for the end recover instead of damage.
Although originally I was going to include Cloak of Fear as my lvl 49 power at the last second I went with Salt Crystals for the -def. I may still bring it back in and steal a slot from Super Speed to help with the end cost. Technically this isn't Soft capped to S/L as you loose some of the defense you get from CoD, but it's pretty close. Although I haven't included a few of the iconic powers from DA/DM ( Cloak of Fear, Touch of Fear, and Oppressive Gloom ) I've done ok without. I'm still debating about CoF as I'd respec'd out of it and probably should have gone with it for my lvl 49 power.
(The Theft of Essence: chance for +end in Dark Regen does hit often enough to make it worth while.)
