New spines scrapper

I have a new concept for a spines scrapper but need some suggestions for a secondary. The concept is that he is a mutant that can convert himself to metal and produce spikes to stab or throw etc.

My first thought was to use SR under the concept that the metal vibrates at high speed to block incoming blows before they hit him. I was also thinking that quickness will help with the non existant attack chain.

Then after playing him as an SR (and dying quite abit in the first 8 lvls due to not being able to put down the baddies fast enough, really wish they would fix swipe power so I could have a second st attack) I started to think of his metal flesh as just replacing itself so fast that it could literally fly off of him. This seemed like a good rationale to pick Regen for a secondary.

I have played a spine/dark and deleted him at 20 something because i just felt like dark let me down way too much. I have since played a DB/WP (love to play solo), and a ELM/SD (May be my fav dmg toon of all). I am looking for a very survivable secondary that will allow me to stand in the middle of an 8 man spawn since i would like to use this toon on teams and am willing to tweak concept if needed so I dont faceplant alot. As you can tell I have always prefered passive secondaries but am open to something like regen if it will get the job done.

So please give me some suggestions on secondary, why they work well with spines, and if possible how I can get it to go with my concept.

Spines/WP. You already have a WP so there's duplication, but you won't be disappointed with either it's performance or it's sturdiness. Spines/Fire is a good combination but if you were disappointed with Spines/Dark then Spines/Fire would be equally disappointing to you.

Spines/Regen can be good, but it takes some investment in defense IOs and recharge whereas Spines/WP is good right out of the box with just SOs.

BTW, Spines/SR once you get to SOs and a few modest defensive set bonuses is extremely strong, but admittedly it's a bit of a late bloomer.

Spines and /sr are both slow to start so really don't be surprised by playing it and feeling like you are under performing. You are. End will be an issue, but it's a combo that I have thought about playing quite a bit, but have yet to do.

I am not really too worried about cost or the need for set bonuses since I have the funds. Mostly I want something that keeps me in the fight.

My worry about wp with spines is that from my experience when it was paired with db that it really needed the kd of the sweep combo and 1k cuts in order to buy time for the regen to work. It also helped that I never had to leave melee for a ranged attack or 2 like spines appears to need.

How much global recharge and def are needed to make regen shine? How late will it be before SR is solid? Does fight pool or medicine make more of an impact when paired with SR?

Thanks again,

Gitch

I'd say you probably want at least 20-25% +def and 50-60% +rech (not including Hasten) to make */Regen "shine". In a perfect world, you'd be getting as much of both as humanly possible (~35% +def(melee) and ~150% +rech with Hasten are pretty good goals).

It's going to take until about level 35 for SR to be "solid" because, before that point, you don't have any AoE defense. SR is late blooming because all of your powers are specialists (you have 2 powers that only add to melee defense, 2 that only add to ranged defense, and 2 that only add to AoE defense) and need friends to be fully effective (the passives all have scaling resistance but you won't notice it unless you have all 3). Ideally, you're going to have every power from SR, Weave, and Combat Jumping/Hover all contributing to your defense by your mid-30s, which is when the ride starts getting substantially easier for SR.

Because of how defense works, both of them contribute a huge amount to */SR. Tough increases your survivability by increasing the number of lucky hits that need to penetrate your defense in any period of time before you fall over (not to mention being the only spot that you can slot the Steadfast Protection 3% +def IO). Weave gives you more defense which is incredibly powerful for */SR (thanks to how defense operates, each additional point of defense you get until you achieve he softcap adds more survivability than the last; 45% +def is actually twice as survivable as 40% +def). Aid Self is wonderful because you can avoid interruption most of the time and you can prevent deaths by attrition by simply healing away the few lucky hits that get in.

You could also go with Spines/Invuln to represent the resiliency of his metal skin.

They synergize pretty well too. Invincibility gives you a defense boost and a to-hit boost based on the number of enemies in melee range, and your PBAoEs will shred them nicely, since they will stick around (Invincibility is also a taunt aura).

I have a suggestion, but it's based more on your concept than on actual experience with the secondary.

How about electric armor? The metal skin of your character could be unique, with properties that allow it to generate electricity in Earth's magnetic field. (I believe that passing metal through magnetic fields is how actual electric generators work.)

As I said, I have no experience with the set, but it could work conceptually. And when you're designing the costume, you could opt for the shiny, metallic look.

I've actually been considering this approach for a claws/electric armor scrapper that I'm planning to roll up.

I think at this point im going to tough out a few more lvls with SR to see if it will be tolerable for the next 30 lvls. Or I may talk gf into making an emp to keep me alive. Thanks for the replies
