quick question

Just a quick question here. Does anyone here play CoH using a DSL cable connection? I'm curious because I have Comcast cable internet, but was thinking of switching service providers for my internet. Is there much of a difference, performance-wise?

I use verison DSL and it works fine with the game. My understanding of comcast in our area is that it's a shared conection so at peek times in a big city it can be slow, you may find that the DSL is actually faster at those times. I use the faster of the 2 speeds verizon offers but i have also played city on the slower with no trouble.

Edited to include:
I do think there is a decrease in speed for DSL that is directly related to how far you are from their hub. They did upgrade alot though in the city so that may no longer be an issue.

I had DSL before my current FIOS.

It was initially provisioned at 768/192 (or something like that) and got bumped at no charge later to 1.5/768.

I have 5 'active' computers on my home net and a few hobby machines not doing much.

CoH played fine simultaneously on two machines while another kid played WoW. The only time we would see any lag from the local connection was when WoW was downloading a large patch while we tried to play CoH.

Where you'll see the speed difference in everyday use going from cable to DSL is web page loading, large file downloads, and streaming video.

If you have the option to go FIOS instead of DSL, I would recommend doing so.

We don' need no stinkin' signatures!

I was thinking of Verizon. Comcast has been booting my internet for the past few days, which in turn also cuts my phone service (I also have Comcast digital voice), and I need to reset my modem to get the service back on. This really slurps when I'm in the middle of a TF or some such thing. Either of you experience loss of service like that with Verizon?

In the past 5 or so years i had verizon I had it go down once and that was cause my router went bad.

To Suspicious_Pkg:

They don't offer fios in the city of Philadelphia yet just in the burbs and i think it will be awhile before they do. The fios tech i talked to said they will have to dig up alot of streets to lay the cable. I would love it if I could get fios.

Oh I see ... Well maybe I really should look into them! Thanks PG

Also, I wasn't aware we can't get FiOS in Philly. But, with the digging up the streets, I can see why we don't have it.

My DSL pretty much sucks like a tornado. Despite that, CoH works fine. The game is not very demanding on your connection.
