Whenever I try and run CoX, i get error messages saying my graphics driver does not support Gl compression or texturing. What do I do? I have a Dell Dimension 2300.

Can you give CoH Helper a run and post the information it gives you back here?

In all likelihood your computer can't run the game. The Intel integrated graphics is a 845GL which I'm sure isn't on the list of supported graphics. Plus your system only has PCI card slots, not PCIe, and no AGP slot.

Edit: No looking at your CoHHelper report, you don't have enough main memory either, even if you had a supported video card/chip.

Your graphics card is incompatible with even the most basic graphical settings of this five year old game. This Intel 82845G cannot be replaced, and your computer is incapable of taking an upgrade. I'm afraid all hope is abandoned, and whoever or whatever told you that you can run CoH was lying.

If you have the money to spend on a new computer, I'm sure myself, Father Xmas and other people will be more than willing to help you.

What can I run with my current set up? And any suggestions on a gods yet. Affordable pc/ maybe a laptop?

It doesn't matter what some third party website says, your system is below the Minimum System Requirements for the game. I wouldn't want to attempt to run it on a system that just meets Minimum either, and the Recommended system isn't that much better.

From the Support Site:

For Windows PCs:
Minimum System Requirements for City of Heroes:

  • Microsoft® Windows® 2000/XP
  • Intel® Pentium® III 800 MHz or AMD Athlon™ 800 MHz
  • 512 MB RAM
  • CD-ROM Drive *
  • 4 GB Available HDD Space
  • NVIDIA® GeForce 2 Series, ATI™ Radeon® 8500 or Intel® i865G Series Video Card
  • 16-bit Sound Card
  • 56k modem
  • DirectX® 9.0c
Recommended System Specifications for City of Heroes:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000/XP
  • Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz or AMD® Athlon XP 2000+
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 16X CD-ROM Drive *
  • 4 GB Available HDD Space
  • NVIDIA GeForce 6200
  • 16-bit Sound Card
  • Broadband Internet Connection DirectX 9.0c

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Wander back up to FatherXmas's post. Look in his signature. You'll see a list for a $600 PC build. MaximumPC this month also has a $645 (think it is) PC build. If you don't feel like building it yourself, use them as a guide for shopping for manufactured PCs. Avoid integrated graphics like the plague.

Okay, others have already given you the bad news.

But, they've also given you what you need to get a system that'll run this game. Father XMas' sig has links for what kind of hardware will be good for running the game in various price ranges.

Processor-wise, just about ANYTHING you buy nowadays is going to be overkill for just plain running the game.

The grahics card is the main thing, and system memory is secondary.

If you're NOT into building your own system, take a look at something like this:

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Mega_Special_II/

This base system is nothing super-special, but it'll DEFINITELY run CoH on some fairly high settings. It has what is currently THE best "bang for the buck" in video cards as the default choice.

Note: The default system setup DOES NOT COME WITH AN OPERATING SYSTEM. Windows Home Premium will run you an extra $104. But, for about $800 (shipped, plus tax) it'll be on your doorstep in 2 weeks (rush jobs pay more), and it'll play pretty much anything reasonably.

While I own and play on both a laptop and a desktop setup, I do't really recommend a laptop for a main gaming system. The laptop just isn't going to be in the same performance class unless you spend 2-3x as much as you would on an equivalent desktop system.

Dell would want you do go to their Alienware line of computers to get a decent card (their regular desktops cap out at Radeon 4350's and GeForce 240's). While that'd run...it'd suck. And it'd still be inferior to the CyberPower system.
