Which kind of attacks are more common?

Hi everybody,

I was considering a new build for a character of mine when I began to think about which positional defense was more useful.

There are several ways to test this. (One could take a super reflexes scrapper, switch off one of the three defenses, and see how long it takes to be defeated by different mobs; or one could fight a longer fight against multiple mobs and then go through the combat log and separately count the melee, ranged, and AOE attacks ...)

But before I spend several days experimenting I'd like to ask your opinion: Which positional attacks do you think are more common in the game? (Maybe someone even already has numbers for this?)

My first guess is that while melee attacks are by far the most common attack type in the lower levels, ranged attacks will appear more often in the middle levels, and AOE attacks will probably win in the level 40 and higher category. (This isn't based on any testing yet.)

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks,

Overall Melee attacks are the most common since almost every NPC has one or more of them, they also tend to be more powerful. In general AoEs are actually less common although some groups do have lots (Malta for example).

In general I would prioritize Ranged > AoE > Melee for Ranged characters and Melee > Ranged > AoE for melee characters.

Obviously soft capping all three is the best but it can be a bit pricey for some builds.

I hate to state the obvious, but the attacks type which is most common doesn't matter that much.

How you play your character will push one type over another.

A tank gathering a nice tight group will face mostly melee
An archer using rain of arrows then mopping up stragglers will face predominately ranged.

Play style is going to have more of an effect that the average distribution of attacks into the categories

Will he, though? Since most enemies have more than one power, they will cycle through several attacks for recharge reasons. Will they really stick to melee attacks only, just because they're standing close enough? Or will they also use ranged and/or AOE attacks, because the melee attack(s) are currently recharging?

Also, and this was just a feeling I had, is it possible that many attacks of high level enemies are considered to be AOEs even if they don't hit a very large area, like, say, the heavier Broadsword attacks?

The character I was talking about is a rad/rad/dark defender that I was thinking about giving a second build for solo play, and thus was looking for IOE set bonuses to defend him. Unfortunately, for some obscure reason there aren't nearly enough slots to raise all three positional defense values to the cap.

With rad infection slotted for tohit debuff.

Anything but an AV is going to be at their to hit floor. I'd suggest looking at recharge more than +def, alos procing out those fast firing rad attacks with lady grey +dam

If you want to pursue defense, ranged is more common than AOE, and you should be able to keep them away quite nicely.

I'll add to this, that my Rad/Rad has been leveled almost entirely solo. My tactic is to basically 'herd' the mob around the anchor, so everyone is nicely debuffed. Doing that, Ranged defence would be far more useful than Melee, as it's only stragglers outside the debuff zone you need to worry about.

However, it turned out that Smith was not a time-travelling Terminator

Ouch. Why didn't I think of that?

Thanks. I'll scrap the defense plan. Back to the drawing board, then.
