just got a new computer with windows7 (64)

everything was going well with installation and updating, but when start to load the game, my computer's resolution which is set for 1440x 900 (which is the same settings for my other computer) changes to a lower number

when the game is loaded all i have is a dark screen, although i know i'm at the loggin screen because of the sound

i'm guessing that this is an easy problem for most, but i haven't been able to figure it out

thanks in advance

If you're using a LCD monitor (the type you find on laptops), then it has what is called a 'native resolution', that is, it already has a preset number of pixels set vertically and horizontally. Making an LCD monitor display a higher or lower resolution will always make the picture look worse. Thus, for LCDs, always use the native resolution (unless your graphics card can't handle it and must chose a lower one).

So, assuming you have an LCD monitor, right click on a blank area of the desktop and chose screen resolution. And under resolution chose the native resolution (which should be the recommended one, or, check your manual or online specifications of your monitor).

So, now that Windows is handling your resolution correctly, let's get CoH on board:

Download and run Tweak CoH.

This will allow you to change the game settings outside the game. Set the resolution to the native resolution of your monitor or to desktop or windowed mode which automatically uses the default resolution of your desktop.

Now, does this fix it?

as an FYI, Store Computers don't ship with the latest of anything. In some cases, vendors like Asus ship products with crippled drivers, case in point being the default graphics driver for the Asus F3Ka notebook having it's OpenGL support stripped out. For reference, the F3Ka shipped with a RadeonHD 2600 mobile GPU, and City of Heroes using OpenGL as the rendering engine.

Something else you have to be aware of is that Windows Update is just that, Windows Update. If you've got any non-Microsoft programs loaded, or any non-Microsoft hardware loaded, chances are you'll need to make an effort to keep your computer up-to-date. Most common Windows Software now includes update notifications or auto-update systems, like Mozilla FireFox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera, Google Chrome, CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, QCD, and so on.
