Crabs have a fair bit of resistance, an army of pets, passable defenses, a pretty good heal/hp boost, and a massive amount of aoe damage. They don't excel in any one place compared to a brute, but the total package is extremely competitive.

Like Riley said, you wont drop spawns as quickly as a brute, but u do have the total package of alot of things that make up for that, one bad thing about a crab, dont think u'll resist defense debuffs cause you'll be sadly mistaken.
The actual Defense of a crab is pretty mediocre unless/until you invest heavily in IO bonuses and pool powers, since it basically just boils down to Tactical Training: Maneuvers and Combat Training: Defensive. However, that is layered on top of the solid protection offered by Serum (Dull Pain clone), Fortification (+Res, status protection), and the distractions offered by your pets (up to 6 extra targets for your enemies) leading to quite the sturdy package overall considering how much (ranged) AoE carnage you are capable of.
Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.
I tank with my Crab. Softcap ranged, melee, and aoe defense, good resists and DPS, not to mention group buffs, and 21% defence for the team. I gave him provoke and a focused on the melee attacks and AoEs (Suppression and Venom Grenade). He's got survivability numbers of a shield brute/tank along with more team assitance, and a rockin self seal/+HP. Only dwnside is the relatively low HP, but I dont find it a bad thing with so much Defense.

So I have a lvl 50 ss/wp brute that I liked lvling, and it's ok soloing at 50 also. But lacks something, last night someone told me to try a crab, that they have the def of a brute (what s what I loved.) and they have awesome powers, pets and AoEs. But I was looking at them and they seem lacking in def, which sense I solo alot is a major thing for me. Am I missing something when looking?
