Luv the buy it nao folks
As you observed, you can not buy and sell from yourself on a single character. You can buy and sell to yourself across multiple characters.
And yes, sitting there watching as you buy for 1k and sell for 100k almost simultaneously is very fun.

Just for kicks, I sold two stacks of Sci Theories I had redside lastweek. There were only 8 for sale when I did it, so I listed 8 more for various numbers between 600K and 900K. Before I logged out 15 minutes later, I'd sold 3 for 2.8M total and bought 7 more for 1234. Overnight, the rest sold for 4.6M more. I also bought 20 during the night for 1011 each, and sold 2 for 1M each the next day. I had nothing to do with the shortage, but decided to list for close to 1M be because I remember someone complaining that they were forced to pay 1M for this salvage. I figure if they weren't smart enough to wait 3 more minutes like I did, I was willing to tax them for 998,xxx more than I paid.

Thanks for keeping the market stocked. Sometimes I have stuff to craft and can't be bothered to roll AE tickets, you know?
I like it when a big spender goes on a shopping spree. I was in the Arena, waiting for an event to get organized, when I saw the message that I had sold something I knew I listed at 25 million.
Then another.
And another.
Bam!
Bam!
etc.
Eight sales at 25 million in under 60 seconds. Now that was exciting!

When you've just dropped 9 figures on a recipe, you want to craft it nao. An extra 10-100k on a piece of salvage doesn't even register.

This is really true. Especially if you know if it's the last thing you plan to craft for a while. I can catch myself at both extreams...I'll find myself balking at paying 50k for something that ususally sells for 5k...And then a few days later I'll slap millions on top of a bid without thinking twice about it. I blame it on the fact that it's play money.

I'm so cheap that I'll sit with a toon with billions of inf and I won't budge higher than 250 for common salvage..........

I have also worked both the areas that the OP is discussing over the years when they were low priced and high priced and thought that as some point I was buying from myself.
Well thats the new thing I learned today
I needed more market slots (on one of my new alts, a non-marketing character). I decided to buy up a bunch of common salvage and resell it specifically to earn sale badges and gain more market slots. I started by buying something that I knew would resell fast -- Alchemical Silvers. I've never known a time when there weren't tons of bidders on those.
I soon switched to Scientific Supplies, because they've been in limited supply recently and that means I can mark them up quite a bit and still sell them. Just because I'm trying to earn badges doesn't mean I can't make money at the same time, right?
I bought multiple stacks at a low price (1,000 inf or less) and relisted them at 26,000 inf. That worked well, my bids filled quickly and everything resold overnight.
As the week wore on I got more bold, listing for over 100,000 each. By mid week the supply of Sci Theories had dwindled. I decided to see how many I could buy. I put in bids of 10,000, then 75,000, then 100,000, then 120,000, then 150,000. That only bought about half of those listed, so I stopped there. (I also discovered that I would not buy from myself -- is this true? I had some listed for sale at 121,000 and put in a bid for 150,000, and the bid did not fill. I only left it up for a few minutes though.)
I had no particular strategy in mind, I just had never made any attempt to manipulate the market before, and when there's less than 50 of something common that sells regularly, it seems like an opportunity. I didn't even attempt to drive the price up... after half an hour I listed everything I had for 151,000, and then put in bids for 5,000.
It's hilarious to get a "you have sold Scientific Supply" message, immediately followed by a "you have bought Scientific Supply" message, when you're doing something like this. It warms my heart. ^_^
At various points there were some 50 or 60 sci supplies for sale, and 2/3rds of them were me selling. By this morning, everything I'd listed for 151,000 influence had sold. I wasn't making a killing per se, but it was a few million in cash and I was having fun.
Also by this morning there were only 22 sci supplies left for sale. I thought, "Man, if I'd only saved a couple i could list them right now for something ridiculous." Then I checked my inventory. Lo and behold, I had one from running missions the night before.
I listed it for 500,000. I figured that was being pretty crazy. But by evening it had sold for a million.
