SD focus on melee and range defense?

im tryin to help a friend with his bs/sd scrapper with soft capping defense. i have made multiple builds and did this but, was wondering would it be better to focus on melee and range and get aoe next? id like to get aoe to around 40ish % and get melee and range to at least 50%. i wanted to focus on melee and range because i wanted to make regen my next priority. what do u all think?

RED CAP DAGGERS: if you want them red side on infinity, send a pm i have the mission to get them for dual blades.

Assuming as much DDR as possible with GC and double-stacked, HO buffed AD, I'd rather have 45% to all than 50% melee/range and 40% AoE. While I haven't done or seen any analysis on that, I suspect AoEs are much more common than tohit buffs.

Also seeing as it's a BS/SD I'd actually concentrate on getting Melee to 35%'ish and Ranged/AoE to 45%. With a single application of Parry you'd be way over the soft cap (at 50% if Parry is unslotted for Def) and it isn't hard to keep one stack of Parry going at all times.

Just to add to what they have already said regarding the character. In my experience you also have to consider what you will be fighting. Since not every group is heavy with area of effect you also do not have to worry about capping it if you aren't going to be fighting groups with a lot of it to dish out. I personally focus on melee and ranged first and if I can cap area of effect then cool, if not then no sleep lost. In all my years of playing CoH I have never worried about capping my area of effect defense on defense characters except for my SR and Nin charcters, but my 2 Shield characters and my Night Widow and Fort only worry about melee and ranged.

DSorrow is correct though, you do not ned to worry so much about capping melee as long as Parry is included in the build because it will always take care of your melee defense being near the cap or over.

I'd point out that the main reason for me to soft cap is so that I can drop parry from my attack chain and increase my DPS. It's an ok strategy as a mid point in your build but I wouldn't stop there.

I'd do that too if I had a BS/SD, but I guessed the OP wanted a sort of budget build which was the main reason he couldn't soft cap everything.

actually im not on a budjet, i just dont use purples. i dont really see how to get beyond 47% defense on all 3 positional defenses. i have all the toggles from SD except grant cover and i grabbed tough and weave. i was thinking of grabbin manuvers or stealth to get me there easier but, didnt wanna be running so many toggles and end up with an endur drain issue. here is my build so far w/o aoe capped.

i say focus on def and RECHARGE(not regen).

you can get by just fine letting parry make up for the last little bit of your melee def,but since i was focusing on recharge,i ended up getting obliterates and that became a moot point.

until i work up some more scratch,my bs/sd is running a bit short on aoe,and he is still managing missions set for 8 while solo just fine.get good at resource management, and you will always have purple inspirations handy if a group is aoe intense.

You have 50% melee and ranged def... Without parry, so ditch it, lets see...

Oh, maybe change OwtS to Grant Cover? (more DDR never hurts and OwtS is nothing spectacular... thou, it adds)
