understanding defense
Only the highest defense number is applied to the incoming attack. In your example, only the fire defense value would have any effect. The melee defense number would not apply, since it is lower than your typed fire defense.

The short answer though is that only one type of defense can apply to a given attack, and the game will choose which ever value is higher. So if you are attacked by an attack that is both fire and melee the game will choose to apply your fire defense, and the melee defense will have no impact. If you are hit by the attack, you are correct, you would take 90 damage.

I have a question for you all. Be warned it involves math.
In my combat attributes screen it shows that I have a 25% Fire defense, and a 7.5% melee defense. I also have a 10% fire damage resistance. So as I understand it if I ONLY had those numbers, a fire ranged attack would be at -25% to base to hit, but a fire melee attack would be at a - 32.5% to hit. If they hit for 100 points of damage I would only take 90 pts of damage? Do I have that right? |
Resistance reduces damage inflicted *when* you get hit. So, in the example above, if your foe got past your 30% Lethal defense and the Damage is 100 points Fire and 100 point Lethal and you have 10% Fire Resistance and 0% Lethal Resistance, then you will take 90 points of Fire Damage and 100 points of Lethal Damage.
