Considering upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit.

What would the pros/cons be from a tech guru's standpoint? this system is used for modeling/animating/gaming and other media purposes.

It has a e8400, 4 gigs of ram, but as of right now im only seeing 3.5 of that since its only xp32 bit. Anyway, would like to hear from ppl with win7 experience if it would be worth it.

Figure I'd get better performance overall, but this is just based off all the surprisingly good reviews im seeing about win7. Whether or not i upgrade to win7, when GR comes out im getting me a new GPU to.

Would just like to know little things, like un-workaroundable things like mem leaks, crashes, incompatibility with old stuff, etc.

Everyone is going to experience operating systems as well as applications differently. The main reason being hardware configuration and the differences between each individuals system.

That being said, you should absolutely make the jump over to Windows 7 64-bit. It is well worth it. Anything that was compatible in Vista, is compatible in Windows 7 software wise. Windows 7 has higher hardware compatibility than Vista so chances are nearly everything you have should be found and or will have drivers. In the end it will come down to your own experience with Windows 7 but there's no point in waiting. It's here, it's ready and you should upgrade

I might add that I'd recommend going with Professional over Home. Among other things, the Win XP Mode it offers is a nice feature in case some of your older programs don't like 7 as well.

I heard that has performance problems and therefore unfit to play games on. It's also requires certain CPU hardware support.

If you've got the space just dual boot. I'll be doing that if I upgrade before they sort out the XP mode problems.

XP Mode isn't for games. So those performance issues will never get fixed. It's meant for software that won't run. It will never be able to do gaming, especially not 3D.
