Soft Caps

I've been reading up on some controller types (mind/kin, ill/rad), and, if I remember Local Man's guide correctly, his thought on ill/rad was that you've got ranged attacks for a reason - you should be hanging to the back, sides, anywheres but near the melee area. On a couple of fire/kin threads they mention soft-capping, but not PVP. Should I assume that any controller builds that have soft-caps are for PVP, or are there some types of controller builds that have fewer ranged attacks so you need to get closer to melee and therefore need the protection?

I'm used to playing tanks, so I know what soft-caps are, I'm just not sure how important they would be on a controller - unless it's more of a playstyle choice.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

No, any soft-capped troller builds would be PvE-minded because of diminishing returns in PvP effectively capping defense on squishies at 15-20% (so basically, defense is meaningless). Generally when people are talking about their softcapped trollers, especially for farming, they're talking about Fire/Kin/Stones that have hit the defense softcap. It's not vital but there's a huge increase in survivability. Being softcapped means you can more easily take on difficult spawns because getting hit just isn't that likely, and in the case of Stone Mastery you've got Earth's Embrace to back you up (and often Tough as well if you get Weave).

Aside from farming, building for the ranged softcap means that as long as you're staying out of melee range, you'll be incredibly difficult to kill between your controls, buffs/debuffs, and ranged defense.

There are some Controller builds that are inherently melee-oriented in my opinion -- Fire/*, Ice/* (if you go with Arctic Air) and */Kin in particular. While you can choose to play other builds in melee, they are inherently ranged. Most other builds will benefit most with Ranged Defense and some AoE Defense. There are a lot of sets with Ranged Defense. It is up to individual preference whether looking for Ranged Defense bonuses will provide more benefit than other attributes like Regen, Recovery or Recharge.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

I have 3 Fire Kins across Justice and Freedom. All are soft capped. Like macskull stated, soft capping greatly increases my survivability since you are always in the middle of the fight with a kin.

I also soft capped my Fire Sonic Controller for kicks. I had money to burn and no toons to enhance so I respec'd the Fire Sonic to 46.2% Smashing and Lethal damage and 28.7% range with 50% recharge bonus. For PVE missions, she's almost unkillable.

The Fire Kin requires alot of effort and influence to soft cap and up the recharge. Surprisingly, the Fire Sonic didn't even require the Weave from the fighting pool.

My other controllers (illusion rad, mind emp, illusion storm and mind rad) are not spec'd specifically for defense. Most are spec'd for +recharge.

Here are the data chunks to both my builds.
